P38 and Corsair

Recommended Posts

Gawd, that Lightening is a gorgeous bird.

And the Corsair is just brutal.

Thanks, Sam!

I visited central Wisconsin last summer to buy a '56 Fairlane and ended up in Oshkosh for the Annual Fly-In. I have been to about two dozen airshows but this was my first with a P-38 in the air. There was a Spitfire D and a P-39 Aircobra in the air at the same time. What a difference the Lightning made!

My Dad was a WWII pilot, told of watching a P-38 land at Randolph and talking to the young 1Lt who brought it in. Dad says "What's t like to fly?" Lt says, "Sir, it's like puttin' an Allison under each arm and a feather up yer a$$!"

Ar ar, pilot humor. Worth a warning point, I guess. <_<

AHHHHH!! The Forked Tailed Devil!!

I'd never seen it next to another WWII fighter. With only bombers to compare it to, I was under the impression it was bigger!! It IS a gracefull looking airframe!!

Two of my favorites also! I have been a fan of the P-38 since I was a kid and two flew over my house at low level on their way to an airshow. The sound was incredible. A few years ago I saw a Corsair fly over my house- I heard it and scrambled outside to see. It was being escorted by a Cessna, and the size difference between the two was very surprising.

This p-38 used to be owned by Lefty Gardner and was known as White lightnin', very familiar on the racing and airshow circuit in the 70,s and 80's. Had an inflight engine failure and made a forced lndg. was then sold to red bull and restored......Doc

Was originally purchased after the war for $1250.00, worth a little more now
