Strange Wire Phenomena

I was looking at the post "John Wayne Pistol" and a fellow posted the links to some pictures. The links don't work (unless they have been fixed) because they have the code still embedded. However, when you click on reply to that post, the pictures appear in the reply box. If the wire can put the pictures in when you attempt to reply to a post, it seems it could certainly allow pictures in the post itself. Sure would make some posts more interesting.

I agree that allowing photos to be displayed would make the Wire more interesting, and easier for those of us who do post links to pictures. Many other forums allow photos to be posted. The Wild Bunch made a conscious decision not to allow photos on this forum a long time ago. Perhaps it is a bandwidth issue.

Driftwood, I'm not a computer guy. I'm just trying to understand why the pictures pop up when you push the reply button to the post with the picture links. Doesn't that mean the code or whatever is already present on the SASS system so the bandwidth argument isn't the real reason?

I could not get the pics to come up for me, and I can't think of a way for them to come up without the proper link. Does it still do it?

Yep, go to post #9 in that thread and click on reply. Just did it and the pics are still there.

And when was the last time you saw an Optometrist? ;)

Doesn't do it on my laptop using IE8 or Firefox 3.6 with a Vista OS.

I have a MAC with Firefox and it is still coming up despite the fact that I am not an optimist. See if this works. Its the page shot of the "reply" button for post #9. You did push 9 didn't you and not the reply button above or below it?

Larsen:

when I started the thread on the 'WiddermAJik and Widdermatic Marlin', I posted the link to the YouTube video.

I have NO idea how that whole video shows up on the thread itself.

Nothing but text here. I told you not to watch that movie Ghost in the Machine.

...and when Gun Click Rick corrected the links in a later post, they behaved just like links should with no image in the "Reply".

May be browser specific?

More experimentation in order.

Truly strange. I can still go to Lee Bishops post, #9, click reply, and see the pictures. Maybe its a Mac Mozilla Firefox thing. I hate computers when they do things and I can't figure out why. Oh well, off to the range to do some painting.

I got 2 photos by scrolling down on that thread posted above...using Firefox & Windows 7.

Nice Colt & a couple guys holding it.

Here's a copy of what I saw.....

ETA: odd....I see the Colt in my own browser but not on my post....

I tried it again today with IE8 and latest Firefox, I don't know how a Mac would handle pictures any differently, especially since it is an improperly configured link to the pictures, not the pictures themselves. Could be the Mac sees what should be a link and converts it automatically, but you see the pics in the reply window, you're not being taken to the web site? A mystery..

Nope. Don't werk for me.

I'm okay with not allowing pics to be posted directly as long as it will keep the Wire running at a decent speed.

Works for me.

Firefox & Windoze 7.

The reason that it does so is that is the post composition page, there is a choice to insert an image.

When I do this on Firefox, I actually see the image (not the link) in the post being written.

But as soon as I save the post, the forum has been set to not display images within posts, so it reverts to a link.

Replies need to have the default view set to not show images.

You mean I can check myself out of the funny farm? Think I'll wait till tomorrow. They're showing Forest Gump tonight.

Sure beats when they DON'T do things and I can't figure out why.

Not necessarily a bandwidth issue

If we include links by external reference - for example <IMG SRC="http://www.photobucket.com...>, then the browser grabs the image from the linked site (in this example Photobucket) instead of from the SASS site. Doing images, video, audio etc this way would not impact the SASS site's bandwidth, so I frankly fail to see why this is not allowed.

Posting photos to this site would require them to be stored and retrieved using SASS' bandwidth and disk space. While I can understand the reluctance to allow that, there are many, many forum sites that do allow it and are free sites that are not associated with commercial enterprises, nor do they charge for membership....so the powers that be are being a little cheap here, IMHO. I don't feel strongly about it though, and it is SASS' right to make the rules for their own site. I suppose there is an argument that every $ spent on the SASS wire site is a $ that can't be spent on other needful things within the bigger picture of SASS activities.
