If they do it now, they are hypocrites of epic proportion. They will praise his achievements and use it to their advantage, but would not let him receive the recognition he was due. I always said they should have let him in the Hall of Fame, but with an asterisk. Yes, he broke a cardinal rule as a manager. But as a player, his records will never be broken.

But it could be that they agree that his statistics warrant his induction but that he didn’t deserve to stand on the stage with others. I wonder if he and Giamatti might have had some kind of arrangement that included the possibility of a posthumous induction??

I wonder if he and Giamatti might have had some kind of arrangement that included the possibility of a posthumous induction?? It sounds like if we were in the same town we could have a lively discussion on this topic. ⚾️ I believe that Rose and Giamatti had a deal. Rose had to stay polite and quiet for a few years, and then he’d get in the Hall. At the time, Pete Rose was still loved by most fans who remembered him as Charlie Hustle. Baseball would have had their moment and all would have been good. But Giamatti died within the year. The deal was forgotten. And the very traits that made Pete Rose such a great player turned him into an asshole who even his most ardent fans, like me, had a hard time accepting. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.😉 But here’s a personal anecdote that shows another side of the Hit King… Ten years ago my daughter was in culinary school at Cincinnati State. As fortune would have it, she got a summer internship at the Reds’ ballpark, it was the same summer they hosted the All-Star game, and she got assigned to work the restaurant that exclusively served the diamond seats. Owners. Players. Big Red Machine stars. Hollywood types. She got to meet them all. One Sunday she was prepping her omelette station before brunch and a noon ballgame. Who walked in but Pete Rose himself. He walked up to her and politely asked something to the effect of, “I know you’re not open yet, but when you get a chance may I please have a tomato omelette?” He then hung around for thirty minutes while she chopped ingredients, heated the skillet, and made the omelette. All that time he was polite and engaging with all the chefs and cooks. He asked each about each themselves in a friendly sincere way. Then he thanked Erin for the omelette and went on his way. Erin said that he was in and out the whole summer. Away from the cameras and media types, Pete Rose was one of the nicest people she’d ever met and showed the staff nothing but respect and gratitude. 2

And what about Roger Maris who deserved it more? I met Pete at a signing in Chicago. He was arrogant and ignored looking at all the fans that came. One said as they walked away that he was sorry he had come and wasted his money, waiting in line to meet a jerk. Can't say for sure if he was drunk or not, but he was also late and staggered into the hall. Rye Miles #13621
Interesting story about the Pete Rose/Ray Fosse collision All Star game 1970. Smokin Gator SASS #29736
In 1972 Ray Fosse spoke at our baseball banquet in Junior college. He talked about that game and gave an entertaining speech in general. It was fun.
