Ninety Caliber Al, 50218 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Do either Pietta or Uberti make an Army grip frame that would fit a USFA?
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Early USFAs were made from parts supplied by Uberti. A lot of Uberti parts were used as they were transitioning to American made parts. To ensure parts interchangeability even the American made USFAs were supposedly built to Uberti specs.

Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Enough of a maybe that if I were wondering I would buy one set and see. Remember you need the triggerguard, backstrap and grips. Most new grips and frames require some fitting. The critical dimension is the screw hole spacing.
Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Prairie Dawg has one Uberti Army assembly right now in the classifieds. Buying as a set is best because it usually came off a gun and so the grip is fitted to the straps.

Bailey Creek,5759 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Look at Texas Grips Maker. He makes a grip that is longer. I purchased a pair for my old model Vaquero's. Fit and feel is great. I take a xx large glove.

Bailey Creek,5759 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 He makes for other Revolvers also. Colt, Uberti.
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Pietta Grip grames WILL NOT fit a Uberti without some work. Uberti grip sets WILL fit USFA. That Uberti Army pattern grip set by Prairie Dawg on the Classifieds is a Smoking Good deal. Your existing screws will work just fine.

Any idea where I might track down another?

Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Ninety Caliber Al: I can look and see if I have another. I had two at one time, cuz I swapped out the army grips on two guns, but I don't know if I sold one or not. --Dawg

Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Hi Al: Looked in all the "usual" places, and did not find it -- Must've sold it. If yer interested, I'll ship it to you & you can try it on your USFA. If you don't like the way it fits, send it back. If you like the way it fits and feels, send me the $$. Meanwhile, if I run into the other one as I'm going thru stuff, I'll let you know Let me know if you are interested in doing that. Thanks --Dawg

Tex Jones, SASS 2263 Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 I bought two Uberti Army grip sets from VTI a few years ago and put them on my pair of USFA China Camps. They worked fine.

Actually got them a little bit cheaper than list since the wood was marred, but not that it could be noticed. The parts were purchased while VTI was still in CT and before it was sold to the present owner. The frames on mine were brass as they didn't have any of the steel frames at the time. Subsequently sold them to another pard and they fit his Ubertis as well.
Ninety Caliber Al, 50218 Posted July 13, 2024 Author Posted July 13, 2024 UPDATE!! Thanks Praire Dawg for the “Free Trial” . The Uberti grip frame fits! Now for my question; There is a (Ruger-like) plunger and spring in a small hole above the left upper grip frame screw(next to the hammer). I was under the impression that only Rugers had that part. My USFA’s were worked on by Long Hunter before I had them, is that a modification that gets done or am I having a”senior” moment lol?
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Uberti and Pietta both use the plunger and spring. USFA used Uberti parts in a lot of its guns.

Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Open Tops are not Single Action Armies. They use the old style leaf spring on their hands.
Choctaw Jack Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Sounds like the plunger and spring is a coil spring conversion for the hand spring.

Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 It's a modification that Long Hunter routinely does on USFAs that are sent to him
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 PLUS ONE for Prairie Dawg. USFA never made the switch to Coil Spring and Plunger. Tis a routine Long Hunter modification. Works a treat too. PLUS PLUS ONE for Pettifogger. Uberti Open Tops were never produced with Coil Spring and Plunger. Pettifogger's tutorials show how to do it thought.
Ninety Caliber Al, 50218 Posted July 13, 2024 Author Posted July 13, 2024 Ok so now I just need to find ANOTHER set. Anyone have one to sell?
