Chas B. Wolfson, SASS #11104 Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Annie and I have decided it is time to replace. It is a conventional inner spring and this is the only style we have ever slept on. Also we have always had a "firm" mattress. Side sleepers as well as on the stomach. So I am asking anyone here that has this type or one of the following to reply why you purchased and the pros and cons of ownership. Thank you Kindly for your replies. Chas B Inner Spring Hybrid Memory Foam Gel Or something I have missed
Yul Lose Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Mrs. Lose and I have been sleeping on a Temperpedic for nearly 20 years and still really like it. Whenever we travel and spend nights on other beds we can tell the difference. They’re not for everyone, as a couple of family members bought them and switched to other styles because they didn’t like them.
Injun Ryder, SASS #36201L Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 You missed "water bed". Have had one since 1977.

Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 My wife and I have different mattresses on the same bed. We both have Twin mattresses, so it works like a King size bed. Now be being a Fat Guy, my mattress wears out after only a few years, it gets a big dent right where my butt goes, which causes me more hip pain than normal. I recently got myself one of those "Bed in a Box" mattresses, and I have to say I like it much better than a conventional mattress. For well under $100, I can replace it cheaply enough. It's firm yet comfortable. It seems to have more even support, but is still flexible enough to move with me.
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 I think mattress store sales guys are sleazier than used car salesmen, I prefer to shop at a furniture store.

Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 I have a Select Comfort (now called Sleep Number) California King size that I just replaced after 37 years. It is dual control that goes from very firm to like sleeping on a blanket and back in just a few seconds Have a Queen size one in the guest room that is around twenty years old and still going like new. My 300+ pound son doesn't like it, but with his weight he can't find ANY bed he does like. I recommend the Sleep Number system without reservation.
Sedalia Dave Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Do your homework on Sleep # beds. Lots and Lots of complaints. I have air adjustable bed in my RV. Don't remember the brand name but it is similar to a Sleep # but cost a lot less. Had it about 5 years and so far it still works. Does have an issue with sagging in the middle between the two air chambers and unless both people are in the bed the settings have to be adjusted. Like it but I doubt I would buy another one. One problem will all the current mattresses is how thick they are. Not an issue in my home but in the RV the 12" plus mattresses really reduce the headroom in my older 5th wheel.
Sedalia Dave Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Lots of information about all the mattress types here https://mattressunderground.com/mattresses/support-cores/airbeds

I don't have to do any homework. I am speaking from a total of 57+ years of personal experience. I'll take that over any number of opinions of people I don't know and don't believe anyway.
Dilli GaHoot Galoot Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 We switched to a Purple mattress a few years ago, Went with the 'standard' one . Pros: It sleeps cool without being cold, a big plus for my wife at this time in her life Very little motion transfer. Getting in and out of bed or having a rough night with lots of tossing and turning doesn't disturb the other person Because of the construction it's firm and soft at the same time, which leads to the first con Cons: At least for us it took a little getting used to, it doesn't feel like a conventional mattress And keeping it PG-13, the firm but soft at the same time construction might require adapting some techniques you have perfected over the last however many decades We have had it about 4 years, overall I would probably buy it again
Eyesa Horg Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 We had a Sleep number for years! Hated it! It never held the setting for more than a couple days! My wife's side would go up almost every nite and mine would drop about every 3-4 days! The way the warranty worked, you had to send the whole damn bed back including all the foam. Then you have NO bed in the mean time. Also discovered when we moved it after a few years, that wicked black mold had grown on the actual air mattress. Gross! Many layers below where you actually sleep! The foam layer was moldy too. Over $800 to replace just the foam! Have Simmons now and it's a tad too firm, but at least it's the same every nite!
Texas Maverick Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 My experience with Temperpedic is much different than Yul's. Our first one about 5 years ago was the most expensive mattress we ever bought. We got the deluxe model and it lasted about 2 years when it started sagging on both sides. My side I could understand more than my wife's side. She is a petite woman and her side also sagged. To me it was a faulty mattress. I had to jump through hoops to get them to replace it through warranty. Finally they did after about 6 months of haggling with them. The new one lasted even less time before doing the same thing. They said there wasn't any warranty on the new one even though we still had over 5 years of warranty on the first one even it it didn't reset with the new one. They said that isn't how they warranty items. You only get one replacement. I said that would be fine if it was good quality mattress and wasn't defective. They seem to know they have a problem because if you look at their FB page you will see hundreds of others complaining on the same issue. I will never get another overpriced piece of junk from them. We have had Denver mattress, Serta mattress and a few others and never had any issues with any of them. We slept on them for years and finally just replaced them because of age. TM
