Metformin is one of the least expensive medications prescribed for diabetes.  It works “okay” for some people, at least for a while, but it is notoriously hard on the kidneys.

Blackwater, sorry I haven’t been keeping up but this statement you made just slapped me in the face.
3 months ago my doctor put me on Metformin as I am “pre-diabetic”. About a month ago I had what I am pretty sure was kidney pain. It hurt on the right side of my back right around where the bottom rib is about 2-3” from my spine. The pain was constant and it felt like a spear was sticking in me because the pain felt like it was about 1 1/2” in and in a 2” circle. It also felt like it was coming through to my abdomen.
I stopped taking my favorite pain killer Ibuprofen because it affects kidneys. But the pain still comes and goes.
Now I am thinking that maybe it wasn’t Ibuprofen at all, but maybe the Metformin.

Thanks for bringing this up. I have a doctors appointment coming up. I am definitely bringing this up to her.

Pat!!

Schoolmarm’s kidney doctor told her to NEVER take another Metformin pill!!

My diabetes specialist told me that she wouldn’t prescribe it to anyone, EVER!

I know a dozen others who have had trouble with the drug and quit taking it in favor of another medication.

Metformin is inexpensive! That is the only reason I can think of for using it and my health is worth a lot more than a few bucks!

Disclaimer!!:  To the best of my knowledge, all diabetic medications are hard on the kidneys.  My doctors have me checked REGULARLY for kidney function!!  I go and get checked every three months, RELIGIOUSLY!!

Pat, I highly recommend that you do the same!!!  That goes for all the rest of you diabetics and pre-diabetics!!

The home health nurse was here yesterday. The bandages that came off were clean and dry with no evidence of any infection or drainage.  She said that she thought that the stitches might come out at the next doctor visit.  That’s what the doctor said last week.

Schoolmarm is starting to feel feisty.  She’s gone clothes shopping and out to eat twice now and her latest tests are pretty near normal.

The next big problem is finding a specialist that can make shoes or modify the shoes I have to prevent new damage where they removed the infected parts!!

Thanks DKC, but this is going to require some special construction.  The removal of the little toe wouldn’t be a problem, but they had to remove the next bone behind it and cut away much of the one behind that.

As a result, it leaves the end of that third bone just under the skin on the side of my foot.  That bone had to remain, at least the part that’s still there, because the tendon that keeps the foot from rolling over is attached to that bone.

SO!! The shoe for that foot or the orthotic that will be needed in order to use any kind of normal shoe will have to be made to cushion that area around the end of the bone, protect the side of the foot where everything was amputated from abrasions, off load the portion of the foot where previous shoes have created ulcers and blisters, and help with the “foot drop” caused by paralysis resulting from previous injuries!

HUGE combination of things to ask from useful, (to me) footwear.

My other option is to spend the rest of my life taking very few steps at a time and sitting on my posterior, wishing that I could do the things that the rest of me could easily do without a problem!!

While I was composing my previous post, I received a call from one specialist that is almost local!  They received a prescription from my foot surgeon and set me up with an appointment for next Tuesday to see if it is a job that they can handle.

Maybe, if they can’t do it they can refer me to someone nearby who can.

Not the best news from the doctor this morning!!

While the most part of the incision has healed well, there are two small sections that had scabbed over, but the skin has not grown in under it.

The doctor debrieded the skin around the incision and packed it with collagen then reclosed the incision with steri-strips.

Reckon this will set me back about walking a little while longer.

The good news is that, overall, it’s still trying to heal up and fill in, there’s no sign of infection, and all of the original swelling is completely gone.

The best news is that Schoolmarm and I got to visit our favorite Italian restaurant and market when we left the doctor’s office.  They treated us like we were long lost family that were loved and missed!!

Our server and good friend treated Schoolmarm to free wine and me to some of the best New York style cheesecake I’ve had anywhere!!  AND!! We picked up some great Italian delectables to take home too!!

Still standing up on my Prayer Bones for the both of you.

I threw down a pillow first as bare laminate floor is hard on the knees.

I thought to go out in the yard and kneel in the sod until I considered:

1) It's been raining, it's soggy and cold and the wife would (ahem) speak to me (ahem) for tracking in mud;

2) the good Christian neighbor would likely heave frying pans and steam irons at me while screaming about "damned Pharisees", and

3) with this recent warmer weather, yellow jackets are out and I'm allergic to wasp venom.

Thus the pillow on the floor.

Delighted in your report of being received at that restaurant like long lost family!

A better day, today!!

At my annual eye exam today, I was really surprised!

No change in my prescription, (I use readers for that and small, fine work) I had no issues with my diabetes, and my vision is still really good for all the years and abuse.  The little gal that did all of the preliminaries was stunned by my 20-15 vision.  My eye doctor said that I was doing very well. I ordered a new set of spectacles and was on my way.

While I was being examined, Schoolmarm figured our taxes and filed them. We’ll get a modest refund.

The home health nurse was here this morning and changed the bandages. Not much to report. The old bandage was clean and dry.  Going to get fitted for new shoes or orthotic equipment tomorrow.

Schoolmarm is doing well and we’re both awaiting test results!

I’m going to be extremely interested in what they come up with for a solution to my footwear needs.

In the category of shoe modifications, FWIW, I follow a pair of brothers who are cobblers and do amazing things re-crafting shoes, boots, etc.  The reason I bring this up is they are in Columbia, not too awfully far away.  Maybe they can refit something for you.  Maybe not.  They go by Trenton and Heath on Farcebook.  I don't know if they can or will take you on.  It could be a licensing thing,  maybe.  Good luck.  Glad to hear things are moving in the right direction.

Just an update, since I’ve had a couple folks call and ask.

Schoolmarm had her quarterly oncology checkup last Wednesday.  She’s going on nine years cancer free and it has become sort of “run of the mill” because she’s done so well!  Her doctor wasn’t happy with her kidney function numbers. He sent her for new blood tests and prescribed a blood transfusion to help get all her numbers back in order.  No worries about the cancer, but all the meds and the recent bout with Covid has him a little concerned.

She’s still doing well and nothing new has happened to set her back.

I’m waiting on the home health nurse to come in and check out my foot and change the bandage.  The doctor says that I am almost there, but I still can’t walk or wear a regular, (modified or otherwise) shoe.

I have another appointment with the doctor Wednesday and I reckon that I’ll be attending the Kentucky State Match on crutches.

Got most of my stuff packed and ready to go. Still got a few things in the laundry, but they’ll be ready in another hour or so.

The foot doctor has warned me that if I mess up her work, she’s gonna do radical surgery on my cranium!! She added some extra padding in my bandage and the walking boot.

Between the folks at Ponderosa Pines and and all my Posse Ten compadres, I think I’ll be well cared for and watched after.

... trying to think of something intelligent, educational, informative, supportive, actually useful and at least a little entertaining, and the mind just went blank!

As I suffer a terrible condition -- you might've heard of it, Hoof In Mouth syndrome -- might be I'd be wise just to stay hush!

What was it the wise man admonished me? ... "a closed mouth gathers no foot ..."

Looking forward to your after action report!  Safe travels, enjoy yourself!

I took care of myself with a lot of help from Imis and so many of my friends that it was almost embarrassing!!

I tried to shoot my rifle on a stage, (I had already decided that trying to actually shoot the match would not be wise) and it fired ONE round and locked up!!  (More on the rifle later)

I worked the unloading table for Posse Ten the whole match and I guess I had around four fifths of the fun I normally have at a match! The only things I didn’t do were walk on both feet and sling a lot of lead!

As near as I can tell at the moment, I haven’t damaged the foot, (we’ll know more about that tomorrow morning) and, as usual, I could certainly use a nap before I unpack all my gear.

The posse awarded me the “Spirit of the Game” award and the folks that run the show, (THANK YOU COPPERHEAD, CAT, and THE PONDEROSA PINES GANG) went ahead and scored me THIRD in Elder Statesman.

Posse Ten collected enough “WOOD” to start a good bonfire, Imis finished second in Josey Wales, and we had a totally uneventful trip both ways to and from the match!!

Take a look at the Kentucky State Match thread over on the wire for a look at “Posse Ten, the new edition”!!

As reported by Blackwater, much fun was had by all involved. Travel was a non issue when you have two people who talk this much. The time flew by, I dont drive as fast as BW, my truck has mufflers and AC. The cabins were ...rustic, interesting and simply appointed. Im going back to Ponderosa Pines.

We not only had a great time, we ate well and I avoided any further damage to this raggedy old foot that’s been giving me trouble for years!!

Home health came by this afternoon to treat it and change the bandage and the nurse said that it had actually healed up a little more!!

   B) DOUBLE BONUS!!  B)
