Cockney Rebel
Does anyone know if the Whyte Leather big lube bullets has black powder lube? I have some that have a blue lube but i assume, if its big lube groove, it should be black powder lube?

Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329
Springfield Slim always used BP-Friendly lube in his big lube boolits. It is soft enough that you can indent it with your fingernail. It can be used with smokeless bullets too. --Dawg
Cockney Rebel
Is Springfield Slim the same guy as owns Whyte Leather ?
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
Sure enough is. He's kinda closed down his business, but you might catch him for some of his "old" stock. A hard paraffin wax lube is certainly one made for smokeless bullets. Some sort of BP lube would be what casters use on most Big Lube bullets, since they are made for black powder shooting. There of course are many varieties of BP lube. SPG being just one of them. Can't really tell by color that has been added to a lube, though. Most BP lubes will be low melting point, so testing for melting in an oven set accurately at 150 F could give you a hint. good luck, GJ
Cockney Rebel
Well these have a low melting point. Easily melted on a hot plate at its lowest setting or a hot air gun.
Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329
I was loading out in the afternoon sun one nice Spring day. Looked over at my next tray of Big Lubes, and the sun had melted all the lube out of them! Low MP indeed!!! --Ole Dopey Dawg

That is "just hot enough it's a little uncomfortable to continue to hold onto" A hair dryer on low heat would be a better way to tell. good luck, GJ

Springfield Slim SASS #24733
I no longer make BP bullets, but my Big Lubes were indeed for Blackpower use using a soft lube. I made my own lube, not SPG, as I found it shipped better. I can give the recipe to anyone who wants it.
Rooster Ron Wayne
Just take what ever bullet you have and put them in the oven on a pie plate . Melt out the smokeless lube . Then pan lube your bullet with Bees wax and lard. 60/40 mix or what ever you like . I did this for years before I started using APP. With APP you can use regular lube or BP lube bullet at your own discretion. Rooster
Cockney Rebel
Thanks Slim, I have been invited to a match that I wasn/t planning to attend and running out of time prepping ammo. Knowing that I can use your bullets as is for BP is great. I would be interested in your recipe also. Currently using 50/50 beeswax and lamb tallow. Smokin Gator SASS #29736
Many of the smokeless lubed bullets have tiny lube grooves. If you melt out the smokeless lube and relube with bp lube they likely will not hold enough lube. It depends on exactly what bullet you're using. I've loaded lots of Slims bullets with no problems. Don't set them out in the sun though.
