Quiet Burp Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 I put some 15LB hammer springs in my Wranglers and got light primer strikes on the .22 cases. Are 15LB Hammer Springs in Ruger NM Vaquero's and Federal SPP compatible ?
John E. Law Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 No, in my experience 15lbs are gonna be to light. The 17lbs springs will work with Federal 99% of the time, but even those will still cause an occasional light hit. The 17s will not be reliable with CCI or Winchester at all. Noticing that this is your second post regarding very light springs. FYI super light springs WILL NOT make the gun run faster so unless there is a specific reason your going so light ie hand disability etc then don't. IMO Go with 18 or 19lbs springs and you'll be lighter than factory but still reliable. JEL
The Original Lumpy Gritz Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 In the NMV, 17lb springs are factory. OMV, came with 23lb.

Are 15LB Hammer Springs in Ruger NM Vaquero's and Federal SPP compatible ? I bought 15lb. springs from Long Hunter and have never had a problem shooting Federal Small Pistol Magnum primers. It may make a difference in whether your guns are stock or slicked up? Mine are short-stroked and still work fine. Springs are cheap, order some and give them a try. Randy Randy
Preacherman Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 If tuned you can get 14# springs and they work just fine in all of mine with federals, no problems. (Not 22)
The Original Lumpy Gritz Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 Just because it goes bang on the first stage, doesn't mean it will on the last, after the gunk and grit builds up.
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 You cannot say whether something is compatible or non-compatible because guns, even the same models, are different. The NM Vaquero has a retracting pawl to aid in loading. How well that pawl fits can make a BIG difference in what weight spring will reliably ignite a primer. Remember the factories put in heavy springs for two reasons. One to make sure to get reliable ignition and the second is to overcome the friction of poorly fitted parts. Fifteen pound springs are no problem in a NMV IF the internal parts are properly fitted and tuned.
Doc X Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 I've used 15# springs in my New Model Vaquero's for 3 years now along with a polished spring strut and deburred and smoothed internals and have had no issues using Federal small pistol primers. As mentioned above lighter springs won't make you faster, but in my case, it sure did make the arthritis in my thumb feel a whole lot better!

Doc Shapiro Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 Why would you even want a spring that light? These guns have slow lock times. Why make it worse?

It seems a very common poundage for Wranglers (and Vaqueros) searching the SASS forum and the websites that stock parts. I'm getting on in years and my thumbs have a lot of pain in the joints, silly things in my youth are catching up to me.

I think it's one of those cases where something that really doesn't help gets a lot of attention. You're already finding that the spring is too light to set off primers. It's unreliable, in addition to making a slow lock time even slower. Buck the trend. Put in a spring that's heavy enough to reliably set off primers. Otherwise you're chasing a problem that is really expensive to fix, and has no benefit.

Things aren't as easy to procure here as in the States. All the Aussie cowboy gunsmiths that stock aftermarket springs only stock 15LB ones, so my choice is to install 15LB springs and them build up with washers until I get 100% rimfire ignition.

Frankly, I'd go back to the stock springs.

Doc Shapiro Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 Then cut a coil off the stock spring and go to the range. Problem is, when you go too far it's too late. 15 pound springs are far too light. If you have issues with your thumbs, maybe these guns aren't right for you. I have problems with a palsey. When I use my hands they shake like a leaf in a high wind. i can't shoot anymore. I guess I'm getting old and don't have much patience anymore. I have nothing left to suggest. You're going to have to figure it out. Good luck.

Searching I've probably (guestimating) I've read over 150+ folks using 15LB springs in their Vaqueros and looking online at aftermarket spring sellers, they nearly all to a T stock and sell 15LB springs. There's no way I'm cuttin' coils off, then I can't go back. Its just going to be a process. Work on them at home and go to the range and shoot them and see if they work. Don't bring them home and increase the poundage of the spring with a washer. I'm happy......it gives me something to do and something to ponder on and solve.

Thanks, but there isn't any treatment for this yet other than brain surgery. My apologies too. I'm sitting here listening to a crap ton of explosives going off. My dogs can't handle it. I can't handle it. My anxiety level is through the roof. Good luck with your project. I think you'll end up finding that you need to go through the hassle of ordering 19lb springs. But that's just a guess.
