I knew there was a manpower shortage during the Great Patriotic War, but I didn't know they were taking them that young.

Making a child play the accordion is abuse.  I know because my parents did it to me.

:(

The Great Patriotic War is much ingrained in the Russian psyche.

They may not always teach it entirely accurately of course. ;)

No!  Say it ain't so!

To give them their due, they shed a lot of blood in causing the Wermacht to throw away men, equipment,  and supplies.

Of course,  then there is Ukraine where initially the Nazis were welcomed in some areas as liberators from the Soviets.

History is muddled and complicated.

Russia has been an enemy since I was born. Looks like they will be when I die. Shame. :(

Seeing him with an accordion, reminds me of an old Far Side cartoon.

In the first scene, you see an angel handing out harps, and saying, "welcome to Heaven".

In the second scene, you see a guy dressed up in a red suit with horns, handing out accordions, and saying, "welcome to hell".

Now, every time I see an accordion, it reminds me of that cartoon.

That cartoon, also kinda ruined me from going to the annual polka festival, that they will be having soon, in the neighboring town.

Oh well....

The Tatars in Crimea were suspected of collaborating with the nazis. After the war Stalin banished them to the Stan republics in Asia which made it convenient for Russians to take over their homes and farms.

Victory Day is a huge deal in Eastern Europe.

I wish it was at least noticed in the United States.

Hope much do you want to bet that George Floyd day becomes a national holiday?

To paraphrase Sefton in Stalag 17 as he is about to have an egg, "You have completely putme off my lunch."
