In all cases, but one, this wasn't true. Almost all of the supposedly "dead" switches were in bedrooms and controlled either a 1/2 switched receptacle (top or bottom 1/2), a ceiling fan light (fan installed but no light kit) or exterior flood lights. In the one case that this was true, the electrician had installed a 2 gang switch box (I guess by mistake during rough-in) but only had one active switch, the other switch had nothing connected to it and no extra wiring in the box that could be connected to it. 3

At our parish one time I was going to do some vacuuming in the church - built by volunteers in 1936. Plugged into the combination receptacle, turned on the vacuum, and the overhead light in the sacristy came on. Turned off the vacuum and the light went out. Turned the light on with the switch, turned on the vacuum, and the overhead light went out. I just unplugged the vacuum cleaner and used a different outlet. I described the issue to one of our members who was an electrician and he gave me an odd look. When he dug unto it he was just shaking his head. During the remodel he rewired the entire building. 4
Alpo
In the living room there's a wall switch. Just looking at it you think it makes no sense because there is no ceiling light. On the same wall as a switch there is one socket. And that switch turns the socket on and off. This comes in handy. I've got a little table sitting next to the wall with a little lamp on it, with about a 25 watt bulb in the lamp. And the lamp is turned on. But the switch is off so the light's not burning. When I leave the house at night, I flip that switch on, which turns the light on so there's a night light on in the house, and when I come home I won't trip over stuff. And it's so much simpler to flip on that light switch then to reach down there underneath the shade and find the push button on the lamp. But my previous house. Had it completely rewired in 91. It had been built in the 40s, and it was wired with two strand paper insulated 16 gauge wire. All of the bedrooms had a ceiling fan with a light kit. And I had them put in a double light switch. One turned on the light kit, and the other turned on the ceiling fan. There was none of this nonsense of having to have the light turned on and then turn on the fan by pulling the string. Just turn the switch on. After the old lady left and took the kids with her I turned one of the bedrooms into my office. And I noticed that one wall socket did not work. I had a radio plugged into it, and when I finally decided that it wasn't the radio problem I just left it there. Along comes summer, and I turn on the ceiling fan, and the radio started playing. The idiot electrician who was only supposed to have the ceiling fan hooked up to that switch, also hooked up that wall socket for some damn reason. Annoying. 2
