Can a Marlin 1894 Carrier be fixed?

Cheyenne Ranger, 48747L

Recommended Posts

My carrier had the button and spring assembly self-destructed during the rifle part of a stage.

Found all the parts. The washer is bent and probably trash

Is there an 'e' clip that I can use to hold the assembly in the carrier?

thanks

yes, there is. I am not sure what it is, but I replaced my washer with an e clip. I just took it to the hardware store with me.

I know that Widder knows the size, I am sure that he will chime in with the correct answer.

Widder spent about an hour on the phone with me the other night talking about Marlin Stuff. The "Widdermatic" man is a very knowledgeable, and intuitive Marlin authority... Not to mention a helluva nice guy.

If ANYONE knows what could be used to fix it, I'm sure Widder does.

I'd send Widder a PM if'n I were you.

Thanks WW and MW.

YES, its a 1/8" e-clip.

Ifn ya have trouble finding one at a local hardware store, holler back at me and I'll send ya one.

AND, ifn your spring was damaged during this mishap, you can use an appropriate sized ink pen spring to replace it.

Best regards.

CR is just HARD on his guns.

I'll have you know this is the first time I broke this part--others, well that's another story.

Thanks for the info. I'll give my local ACE a try. Most times they just see me come in to mail stuff for Miss Violet. They'll be shocked to actually have be buy something

Two summers back, a Cowboy Pard handed me a relatively new 1894 that had only been fired less than a box of shells. The action was locked up tight.

I took it apart and the retaining washer on the carrier had worked itself off.

On my Marlins, even those I bought new a couple years back, I clip the washer off and install the e.clip

Do you need to grind a notch in the pin to hold the e-clip? This sounds like a good preventative maint. thing.

Widder,

Excellent---sounds like a good thing to do before a problem arrises.

Eyesa,

I've probably installed (or given away to Marlin pards) about 50 of these eclips.

I know of only 3 of them breaking off and ALL of those were within the first 50 or so cycles of the action. Those 3 could be attributed to some metal flaw in the eclip. And the eclip replacement has been reliable for the past couple years on those Marlins.

One of those rifles belongs to me. As with anything, there's always gona be that little gremlin occur.

My very first usage of an eclip is on my original Widdermatic Marlin, which has functioned perfect for over 4 years now.

I've seen alot more problems with that factory retaining washer than I've every experienced with any eclip, especially in the usage of Cowboy shooting.

At the same time, I have seen a couple rifles that have been used extensively and the factory retaining washer still works perfect and sits tight on the plunger stud.

Its a good fix and I use eclips on ALL my Marlins.

What does that plunger actually do anyway?, Also a bit off topic, but how often do you recommend disassembly of the bolt to clean the firing pin and extractor?

Eyesa,

that plunger is critical in raising your carrier during the upwards movement (or closing) of your lever.

During the closing of your lever, it rides on the flat portion of your lever directly in front of the snail cam. This causes the carrier to rise upwards to the chamber entrance.

Taking out your firing pin and Extractor for cleaning is subjective to how dirty your loads are, shooting in inclement weather, humidity, etc.

I take out my Extractor about every 6 months and clean that hole with Q-tips soaked with Marvels Mystery Oil. It takes about 5 q-tips. Then I use my compressor to blast alittle air down in that hole just to help clean out any other residue.

As long as my firing pin freely moves (rattles) when I shake the bolt, I don't take it out for cleaning.....UNLESS I get caught in a bad rain while on the range.

There are Pards who clean theirs more often and some Pards who clean it less often. There are too many particulars to suggest that any type cleaning maintenance that will work for everyone equally.

It's all Greek to me, but it's gotta be music to the ears of those who have a problem . Widder is the man when it comes to Marlins....shame that the manufacturer doesn't hire him as a consultant.

CR, ignore what all these folks are tellin' ya. Once that washer comes off, the carrier is unfixable. Since you're a pard of mine, just bring that old broke carrier to the next shoot and I'll take it off your hands so it can be destroyed properly..... -_-

Howdy; Wore out or broke the pin on a 45 colt (,much used) The oringinal Marlin folk fixed it and gave me a spare complete lifter. Said the rifle was desinged for hunters fireing 100 rounds a year, not 100 per day. You cowboys! she giggled, on the phone.
