Va State Match

Recommended Posts

A big shout out to the Cavalier Cowboys and the crew who put on a fantastic state match. Great scenarios, very interesting and amusing targets, shade, fans, food, berm Marshall’s, waddies, score keepers, etc I could go on and on.

I can’t wait till next year, they only get better.

We had a great time with our friends both old and new.  Thanks to everyone on the committee that worked so hard in the miserable heat and humidity to get everything done.

My vending went very well, too.  My thanks goes out to all those who supported my little hobby.

It was such a great time! There ended up being 105 shooters and 28 ladies - 26 pictured !! It was such a blast! It’s been the best kept secret that is no longer a secret! 🥰

Holli and I had another great time at the Gunfight at the Double C!  Really enjoyed the stages and the hospitality of the folks at the range and the Cavalier Cowboys.  We already have it on our 2025 shooting schedule.

While we weren't there for the extreme weather event on Thursday, the range folks and the Cavalier Cowboys did an incredible job getting every thing returned to operation after the micro-burst.  From downed trees, to mangled canopies, to flooded ranges, to washed out roadways, arriving on Friday evening you would never have known it happened.  Many thanks and Kudos to everyone who pitched in to get everything back into "Gunfighting" shape!

Congratulations to all of the winners, especially to Scarlett Darlin' who whooped all of us FCGF wanna-bees.  She kicked all of our butts! :o

Scarlet, I will see you in North Carolina for Round 2 of my butt kickin!  :P

I did figure out what broke on my TTN shotgun on the last stage of Day 1.  The sear spring on the left hammer clean broke in half.  Shot Day 2 with Holli's backup Stoeger.  It took me 3 stages to remember how to use that dang thing and probably cost me 20 seconds overall, not that it would have made much of a difference in my standings.  It's back in operation now, (I scavenged parts from my backup TTN that is down with other problems) and replacement parts are on order.

Regardless of the outcome, (I only missed one target Dagnabbit) I won the most important thing of the match, a great time, with great folks, and a big smile on my face at the end of it all.

We Will See Ya All Next Year!

This was an excellent match!  My second time here and it just gets better.  This year they included a microburst on Thursday night with a spectacular lightening show.  I missed that as I elected to stay in a hotel rather than on the range.  It washed out areas, felled a tree across the road, tore an awning off a camper, ruined a couple of the popups, flooded some of the bays and pretty much required a complete reset of the stages yet they had it all cleaned up before side matches started!  Amazing work!  The stages were very good with no real P traps.  The targets were close and hittable. Movement varied from a stand and deliver, to a few steps to each shooting position, to a "haul butt" back and forth stage.  The props are just outstanding.  They have a running rabbit on a rail system that with the shotgun you shot the activator which "loosed" the rabbit to glide down the rails so you could "shoot that wasqually wabbit."  Then there were cowboys that you shot the hat off of and they either put their hands up in surrender, dropped their pants or a scared face popped up.  You had plenty of rounds to hit the cowboy hats and they were certainly close enough that just about the only way you could get a miss is with a malfunctioning gun or missing the static target afterwards.  Speaking of static targets their dump target was literally shaped like a pile of $hit.  They had a train prop complete with shotgun targets that were shaped like signal lights on a "signal tree".  It also had a "signal tree" that had 3 shotgun targets with a wood bar that went across one of them.  You had to shoot the signal switch (a  ground shotgun target) then the lower signal tree light target which tripped the wood bar giving you access to the other 2 shotgun target lights.  Woody from Toy Story made an appearance again too.  The main match used 5 bays and you shot 2 stages on each bay (6 on Saturday & 4 on Sunday).  The booklet was well done, registration was a breeze, the raffle and door prizes were very good, they had chicken & pulled pork BBQ one day after shooting and pizza the next.  Awards were nice and the awards ceremony moved right along.  Most importantly they had 2-3 big a$$ fans on each stage because it was toasty to say the least.  For side matches they had speed events, long range, a couple of warmup mini stages and a 4 stage wild bunch mini match.  There was also an RO class and Christian Mortician put on a "Shoot faster without shooting fast" clinic with the proceeds going to the club.  EVERYONE that was part of the crew kept asking if you needed anything and sincerely wanted to know if you had any suggestions to make the match better.  All in all a very good match put on by a super group of people.  You should give it a try!
