Nipples for 1860 Army

Recommended Posts

I have an EMF Hartford model 1860 Army revolver.  I have had it for several years and it has the same nipples from the factory.  I want to upgrade it and add some

new nipples and other parts, but I don't know the size.  Could anyone out there help me and tell me the size nipples I need.  It is not a Pietta.  Thanks a bunch.

Unfortunately "EMF Hartford" is a generic name EMF has used for guns from a variety of manufacturers.  Look it over carefully and there should be proof marks and a marker's stamp on it somewhere.  Maybe call EMF and see if they can help.

EMF is the importer, not the manufacturer.  Somewhere on the frame is the stamp of the manufacturer.

Look under the Loading lever.  Piettas usually say “FAP” or Pietta.

Uberti guns usually have a “ U” inside an octagon.

ASM guns usually say “ASM” under  the loading lever

There are others, but those are the most likely three.

Once you determine the manufacturer, check with SliXPRINGS for replacement nipples.

Seeing as the gun is 15+/- years old it is likely a Pietta or Uberti.  I don't know exactly but I am pretty sure ASM has been out of business for quite some time now.  If you can post pictures of either the gun or the box it came in I am sure we can help identify which brand it is.

If you have an Ace Hardware store close - take one of the nipples to their bolt section.  You can check the thread count with their wall mounted "tool" (multiple threaded pieces that are used to determine your particular thread count).

Good luck,

For my own education...  Once the thread is determined how does one know if it is a Uberti or Pietta?  The various online dealers sell replacement nipples by manufacture not thread size.

That is highly unlikely.  Most nipple threads are weird combinations.

Go to Track of the Wolf.  They list the thread sizes for various makers.

I think the OP will probably find the manufacturer if he looks at all the markings.  If not, find a friend than shoots percussion, and ask to borrow some of their factory nipples that they removed, and see what fits?

I'm using the TOW nipples in my Pietta 1860s w/ Rem #11 caps with no issue. They had a choice of length as well.

Badman Bullets carries SliXshot nipples, and on their order page lists both the pistol manufacturer and their thread size & pitch necessary.
