Alpo
While I was making breakfast I heard a large vehicle driving down the street. I looked to see if it was the garbage truck, and it was a school bus. School bus? This is still the beginning of August. So I just went and pulled up our school calendar. School started yesterday. How about that And glancing down the calendar I saw something sort of amazing. Monday, October 14th, is Columbus Day. Not "indigenous peoples day" or whatever they've decided is the politically correct term now. Columbus Day.

Cypress Sun
Mine has both and also has Thanksgiving Day (Canada) on the 14th. BTW, Columbus Day is top billing on mine.
Rye Miles #13621
School starts Thursday here in my town. I remember when it used to start the day after Labor Day!

Alpo
I remember when Thanksgiving holidays was you got at 1:00 on Wednesday, and had Thursday and Friday off. Now you're out all week. Easter holidays was you got off at 1:00 on Good Friday. Now you're out for 2 weeks. Which is why school now lasts 'til the end of June and starts in early August. Summer vacation is basically July. When we were kids, we did not get as many weather shutdown days. Also there were no "in service" days for teacher training. I always though of them as "out of service" days, but that too comes from my understanding of the sign on busses when I was a kid.
Will Kane
Down here in South Texas, many schools take a “weather day” Monday following the Super Bowl.

That could be to make parents think twice about having too much fun (beer), make them have kids around all day long. Or it could be to let the teachers have all the fun (beer) they want on game day and not have the kids around all day long. On edit: No reason it could not be both... Forty Rod SASS 3935
No matter what it is called, a day off with pay is a socialist payday for people who are teaching our kids almost nothing of value. That's one of the reasons I walked away from teaching over twenty years ago. That, and labor unions taking over things that they have no business getting into, and doing it without the intelligence, education, or authority to do so. California used to have a rule that teachers DID NOT HAVE TO BELONG THE THE UNION. We had to pay a $20.00 a year "maintenance fee" because they did keep certain things moving. The harassment was more than I wanted to deal with and it came to a head one day after school. During the week were used a church parking lot across the street for overflow staff parking. The head steward and one of his brain dead sidekicks followed me across the street, off the school grounds, and started pushing me around. I ended up knocking the steward on his butt and throwing his flunky into a flower bed ( my last physical contact type fight)....all in front of a local cop who was directing after school traffic....and about a dozen students. After a week of legal and physical threats I walked into my boss's office, dropped my keys and box of school property on his desk and walked out. Somehow we stayed friends, but this was never again mentioned. The whole affair made the papers, but our local leftist media never once blamed me for this. Things have changed since then. I'd probably get lynched these days
Blackwater 53393
Schoolmarm quit the teachers’ union when they started supporting “teaching to the test” about twenty years ago!! She told the local president point blank that this was NOT education but rather memorization and that she would have no part of it!! In subsequent years, her students consistently outperformed the other classes in her school and she taught for another dozen years without interference. It should also be noted that she was requested by parents at a rate of five to one until they stopped allowing parental requests because it offended teachers who were not requested!

Good on Schoolmarm, tough poop to the teachers that didn't want to teach.
