watab kid
wonder if their clothes were fire retardant ?
Alpo
I wonder if the other end of the crowbar has a wrench? He's got a fire hose. If he was the first one to the fire, he could be hooking his hose up to the hydrant, assuming he had a wrench.
Pat Riot
I wonder if someone actually used this at night. That carbide lamp at any speed wouldn’t work worth a darn.

He doesn't, he chases the fireman while nipping at his ankles the whole time. It's by design, makes the fireman pedal faster enroute to the fire. 1
Alpo
I just decided that thing next to the crowbar is the hose nozzle. Originally I thought it was a flashlight. But even with a nozzle, he's still going to need a wrench.

It never occurred to me that that was supposed to be a headlight. I thought it was his light for when he got to the fire, because when you're looking through the smoke and the darkness for people to pull to safety, having a light would be a good plan.
Calamity Kris
The "Prybar"on the handlebars is also a hydrant wrench. You can't see that end of it but that's what it does.

Rip Snorter
Back in the old time NYC neighborhoods you learned to open a hydrant with a wire clothes hanger and a broomstick / stickball bat. Edited May 4 by Rip Snorter Typo 3

The red holder is made for a straight bar, too skinny for jaws to protrude from the bar.

Rip Snorter
Actually, there were still stables near Central Park at least into the '60's and horse drawn carriages for tourists to ride. Sanitation workers with a cart and a shovel would clean up.
