Mackinac Bridge on Sunday night

First time I took my bride across her there were high wind warnings. No trucks or campers allowed. She would have been really impressed if she had opened her eyes more. Or looked down through the open grating. LOL. You could see the span ahead of you moving. Couldn't feel it but you could see it.

Winter is cool too. Just the shipping channel is cleared. Looks like a narrow road.

My bride and I drove across it a couple years ago.  It is an impressive sight.  I have also seen pictures of it in a winter ice storm.  Scary doesn't even begin to describe it.  Respect nature and she will respect you back.

Back when I used to be into snowmobiling I crossed it often in the winter. The best snowmobiling is always when the worst driving conditions are. For people complain that CAS is expensive give snowmobiling a try.

My dad had snowmobiles back in the early 70s.  Those old monsters were, work on them for a couple hours to ride them for 15 minutes.  I didn't do trail rides as I was too young to bar hop, which is what everyone did then.  They still do only at rocket speeds.  I grew up across the lake from the family that owned the track in Eagle River, WI and were world championship racers.  Underneath all the hype, they're just buttheads like the rest of us.  Too darn cold for my tastes.

I have friends that used to race the I-500 at the Soo every year. It was always a good time, some of those little UP towns are pretty busy in the winter. It’s a great way to see scenery you just can’t see any other way.

It’s probably been over 20 years since the last time I visited Mackinac Island. Always enjoyed visiting the fort

Summer in Michigan must be beautiful.  I wouldn’t know.  It snowed one week after I transferred to Cheboygan in September and there was still snow on the ground when I left the following May.  I think I passed spring around Saginaw.

I really enjoy the change in seasons , even winter . But I do admit getting sick of the snow by the end of February. To me fall is just the best , but that’s probably because it’s hunting season.

I'm heading up tomorrow. Lower peninsula, Big Rapids area. Going to sit a stand in the morning, cut wood in the midday and get shatfaced at a camp down the road in the evening. Rinse and repeat.

Is the Mackinac Bridge the one from the LP to the UP? I’m heading up to Manistique in the UP the last week of the month. Staying about a week. Eldest son bought a place for a summer home. This year he is planning to stay through Christmas. My DIL and Grandkids are southerners, never seen a “White Christmas”. So they are all excited about snow. My folks were from upstate NY, Rochester, to be exact.
So what are my chances of getting out of there before snowfall? When I leave I’m heading for Rochester. The younger son lives there. So another week in the far north.
If I get out alive I’ll be happy.

That’s the one , the mighty Mac . It could snow in the next couple weeks in the UP, you never know. But they usually don’t get snow that stays til November. You’ll be fine yoopers are pretty friendly. Just remember your a troll because you live under the Bridge. Right now everyone up there is occupied with hunting and fishing. Around Christmas snowmobile season and ice fishing starts . Get yourself a pasty , I’m also pretty sure there’s a casino there

Troll, Ha Ha, I love it. I’ve seen some pictures of the sights in that website. My Grandson sends me pictures as they explore the area. My son is retired USAF.

Most yoopers don’t acknowledge being part of Mi , they mostly root for the Packers “with the Lions I can’t say I blame them”, they say they are from the Superior state, guess that comes from Lake Superior. Your son probably gets referred to as a troll or fudgie. Tourists are fugie’s because they all buy the Mackinac island fudge. Which is quite good

One thing I miss about Cheboygan;  the Gold Front Cafe served “Bleu Cheese” salad dressing— chunks of bleu cheese in a Russian salad dressing base.  Inspired!

Otherwise, Cheboygan was a pit.

It probably hasn’t changed much since you left. Allot of the small Mi towns don’t. Alpena has grown some, I would imagine you might have went there, it’s about the biggest town in NE Mi .

I guess it’s all about what size town you need to keep you happy.

Sounds like you need to join the snow bird crew. I know a few people who go south by Christmas and don’t come back till it’s gone.

Bow season, then gun season, then muzzleloader. Then, in a perfect year, right into ice fishing! Then there's the rest of the year.....

You Michigan folks might be interested in books by Steve Hamilton, he write about Alex McKnight  an ex cop living in the woods and owns cabins that he rents to snowmobilers and such and gets involved in solving crimes, pretty good reads. A Cold Day In Paradise is the first one and it got me hooked.

not sure when your season opens but ours is a couple weeks off yet , this week is the first of our cooler weather , been in the mid to high 70s up till yesterday - cool and windy low to mid 60s , dropping to 50s and lows at freezing , its definitely deer season ,

next week ill be in southern illinois - back to last weeks weather and looking forward to it , when i get back ill be hoping not to get snow .....only partially kidding , it could happen - in 91 we had a blizzard on halloween that stopped us here for a couple days - we got a couple feet of snow ,

yul - im going to check that author out , i like reading that sort of entertainment
