The Chair Trick

Works if the door opens into the hall. Not so much if it opens into the room.

Now it's been many many years since I was in school, and while I can't say for certain sure I'm pretty sure that the doors opened outward into the hall. Seems like most public building doors open outward.

But all the doors in every school that I went to had door knobs. Round, not straight.

I don't think architectural codes allow  classroom or public building doors to open to the inside.  So in public buildings this is a good thing for everyone to be aware of.

Doors open outward in public buildings due to fire code - they follow the flow of traffic out of a building. Classroom doors open into the hall, entrance doors open to the outdoors.

Back in my day....a long, long time ago when I was a school kid,

we learned "Duck & Cover."

Times have changed.

I always thought that was the stupidest drill in the world.  My dad was a school teacher and asked me why.  I told him if I was going to die from an atom bomb I wanted to do it without being in an embarrassing position.

He at least had the decency to laugh.
