Badlands Bob #61228
There was an alternate theory that Tilghman was on the take from local prostitutes and liquor peddlers. He was interfering with a raid being conducted by Federal Agent Wily Lyn, when he was killed. There was a trial and Wily Lyn was found not guilty. Like many of the old west characters, he who has the best publicist, wins.

Blackwater 53393
So many of those old political/criminal rings were dissolved or broken up back in those days! Many of them, once busted or defanged, were quietly allowed to fade because even those who had nothing to do with them usually had something of their own to hide. Rather than risk some embarrassment of their own, they just let the story slowly die. Much the same as the press and politicians do today. The next news cycle usually draws attention away! Pick your historical era. It will be full of complex characters. And the last people standing in each era get to write the chapter.
