Presently I use the 'green Magna lube in my Star sizer...when I run out I'd like to use a mix of my own, anyone have a successful recipe that works fine for smokeless bullets in the Star ?

Thanks....

I like to make my own stuff too and looked into making lube for homemade wonder wads. I found it was about like the economics of loading shotgun shells vs buying them. I couldn't find a local source for beeswax or mutton tallow. I ended up buying a pound of each from different sources and paid shipping on each. In the end, it would have been cheaper to buy lube already made. Then I was told of another source for lubed wads that would have been less expensive than my homemade.

But lube for smokeless may be much different.

Just mixed a batch of Ben's Red for my Star smokeless sizer. A detailed video on mixing is on you tube, and the recipe is on castboolits.com

Much softer than the green crayon lube, use lower temp and air pressure for the Star

It's fans rave about its versatility.

I use candle wax and automatic transmission fluid. Start with 3 parts wax and 1 part atf and adjust to your needs.

This is for low velocity loads. I have not tried it in my 30/30 yet so can not recommend it for higher velocities.

Cast Boolits recipe for "LithiBee" is my standard for smokeless lube. "Simple Lube" is simple, too.

See JB's post above to get to Cast Boolits Lube forum.

Best lubes usually have beeswax. Find you a cheap beeswax source, and you will save money.

Otherwise, use a low cost commercial lube. Like Carnuba Red from White Label Lube. http://www.lsstuff.com/lube/

Good luck, GJ

I make a lube designed for BP. It also works for smokeless. Gunsmith Frank uses it in his Star luber with no heat.

50% beeswax, 25% solid vegetable shortening and 25% olive oil. I made molds using 1" ID plastic pipe. 1" corks on each end with a 1/4" hole drilled in the center of each cork(rubber stoppers work too) for a dowel rod. melt ingredients in double boiler, blend thoroughly. Cork one end of pipe with dowell through cork and sticking out the other end of pipe. Ladle in lube leaving 1 1/2" space. put on other cork and let it firm up. Fits in Star and RCBS lubers. In the winter I use it on my hands to keep them from chapping. I buy my beeswax from Michaels craft store, usually about 16$ a pound.

YEE OUCH!

Last batch I bought was $3 a pound. A year or so ago. Direct from a small business that does bee keeping, honey is the big product for them, and wax is a side line. Do a little looking - you can save a lot.

Good luck, GJ

This, it's hard to make your own for what these folks produce.....However with two Stars I do make my own BP lube...Good Luck :)

Thanks..Heaps of suggestions there. Went to the Cast bullets lube forum..the 1/2 beeswax & 1/2 Virgin olive oil that works well in the star without heat sounds good ! I will give it a try.
