Eau Claire, WI Bans 21-Gun Salute Because It Involves Carrying Guns

"The Eau Claire Area School District set a new low for the actions of anti-gun school administrators Tuesday when they put a halt to what had been a Veterans Day tradition in the Wisconsin city. The school district barred a local veterans group, the Patriotic Council, from conducting their traditional Veterans Day program on school grounds because it includes veterans carrying rifles and a 21-gun salute with blank ammunition.

Attempting to justify the school district’s decision, ECASD Executive Director Timothy Leibham told local TV station WEAU, “There are just some conditions that we have to adhere to and the shooting of guns, even with blanks, is something we don't feel is appropriate given society, and the concerns that we have and that the community has, on school premises.”

According to the Patriot Council, attempts were made to compromise with the school district, but their offers were rebuffed. Patriotic Council Vice President Kaye Olsen told WEAU, “It's really hard to tell the veterans they're not allowed to bring those rifles in... Which, the only purpose is, to honor our flag and our country and to teach the kids.” She added, “I was hoping maybe we could find a compromise, but when it comes to the weapons, there was no compromise.” The group eventually decided to move the program to the property of a nearby Burger King.

The fact that these school officials have targeted a patriotic, ceremonial, and formalized tradition of veterans honoring their fallen comrades from our nation’s wars illustrates the zealotry behind efforts to use public education to marginalize every aspect of the role firearms play in American life. ECASD school officials would rather deprive students of the opportunity to learn about the sacrifice of our nation’s veterans, and deny veterans the opportunity to share their experiences with succeeding generations, than acknowledge the legitimacy of firearms for any purpose. That is not only a disservice to their students educationally; it is an insult to those who carried those arms in defense of American freedom."

Eau Clarie school administrators are evidently not bright enough to figure out the reason there is public education, and school systems, and celebrations in the US is because men with real bullets in their guns fought for those freedoms and opportunities years ago. Interesting what passes for "educators" nowadays.

Howdy.

Best solution would be to replace that ungrateful board.

Next best would be to have the veterans not participate at all.

Or show up and sit in, not participate in the ceremony.

Kids are often surprisingly smart.

That board needs to go.

Best

Our little community of Warsaw see's it different. On Veterans day the high school along with every child in school attends the Veterans Day Program. Kids from the other 2 schools are bussed in. The high school seniors get all dressed up and as veterans arrive 8-8:30am, those seniors escort every veteran into the school and open the doors for them. As the veterans sign in other senior women escort those veterans to a table on the gym floor and other seniors bring drinks. Then they bring a hot breakfast of eggs, B&G, hash browns & toast. After the eating the American flag is brought in by the color guard where everyone rises for the occasion. Patriotic songs from the choir along with the band. A special veteran guest tells all the students their expirence during war and what it was really like. Sometimes photos are shown. Then the final song where every veteran is introduced by their branch. When it is all over the students escort every veteran back to their vehicles. The entrance to the school is lined up with American flags. The students learn how to honor those that have given them their freedom. And learn what that freedom has cost.

We also have rally around the flag for prayer by the students.

Not educators. These idiots likely have zero classroom teaching experience. Call them educationists. They want us to teach kids how NOT to think, just follow the bouncing ball.

Smoken D, the elementary and middle schools my daughters attended had a similar program on Veteran's Day. Every child that had a relative that was in the military or a veteran was allowed to bring the relative in for coffee, doughnuts, orange juice and the like, and recognition was given to each of the groups, WWII, Korea, etc... but always including those that had also served in times of peace.

This year, the school district added something for graduation ceremonies, each graduate who had committed to a branch of the military wore a red, white and blue cord to designate military service.

Rather than being outraged, I'm just very very sad at this.

There are times when I feel like moving to Costa Rica.

Where are the parents? How did they feel about such actions. Seems to me that someone should lose their job over such an action...

As a Social Studies teacher of 28 years, I always found that administration personnel were always the last to have a clue but the first to legislate.

Time to get parents involved!!!!
