I didn't realize that we produced a 105mm Recoilless Rifle. in 1958/1960 the army infantry was using jeeps to haul the 106s. Only one to a jeep though. I can not imagine any real advantage to five or six mounted on the track. Those 106s were quick on the target. Quick to load. What is not to like.

The Powers That Be wanted a light, fast vehicle: There is an urgent and immediate need in our army for a vehicle similar in performance to the jeep, but at the same time affording some armor protection and greater cross-country mobility, for use by reconnaissance personnel, commanders, messengers, and liaison officers who are frequently exposed to small arms fire. And someone got the bright idea that it might make a good tank destroyer too. Could fire single, doubles, or the whole load. A big drawback was that someone had to get out to reload.

The Corps seemed to take a liking to them, though. Real good with a beehive round, I'm told.

The Marine Corps still had these at Camp Pendelton in late '69 and early '70 just before I went to Vietnam. I never saw any over there. They were used in training just before deployment to RVN.

They were still in use in 1972. They were used on convoy escort duty. Flechette rounds were unbelievable ..... VC pinned to trees 150 yards from the road...

Marines called it The Thing with a sting.

Nasty against massed tanks, but nobody ever massed any after about 1945...maybe in the Middle East.

When the Egyptians dug in their tanks in the Sinai in '67. As I recall, the tactic was a dud and they lost the war.
