Beartrap SASS#57175 Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Have all the official loading data but I'm looking for some opinions on favorite powder/bullet combinations. Don't need actual powder charge data. just favorite type, etc. and why if possible.
The Original Lumpy Gritz Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 H-335 powder meters GREAT in a Dillon PM. Add a 55grn fmj and you have blasting ammo. Cheers, LG
Muleshoe Bill SASS #67022 Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 H 335 or AA 2230 and 55gr FMJ. hard to go wrong
Stubborn Dutchman, SASS # 61363 Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Nosler 55gr varmiters with TAC powder, makes a really accurate combination. TAC meters well, and burns very clean. My competition load for High Power uses Nosler 69gr competition bullets with W-748 loaded to 2500 fps. Again consistant performance and clean burning.
Cattleman-Osage Nation Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 The Army Service Rifle Team used the 77 gr Sierria Match King and Reloader 15 powder several years ago.
G. P. Cobb Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 How do these loads and ratios compare with LEO loads and our boys in the military?
Red Logan #12252 Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 How do these loads and ratios compare with LEO loads and our boys in the military? What do you want, speed, or accuracy, they dont go together... mil spec and factory just dont hold a candle to quality re-loads... I've tested most factory and a lota mill stuff. LC is the best...
Chickasaw Bill SASS #70001 Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Most of my loads are BL2c or Imr 4895 . If using mil brass ya might want to back the powder of a bit (pressure) 40 gn to 62 gn projectiles . CB
Uno Mas SASS #80082 Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 . For light varminting up to and including 'yotes: Speer's 52gr HPBT is good medicine.
grubstake charlie Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 For shorter ranges (200 yds and less) Benchmark and HRN V-Max 50gn bullet. Sub-MOA groups (.6 at 100yds) and explosive impact. I tried Benchmark back when Varget was difficult to find, and it is consistent, meters well, and is temperature insensitive. For longer ranges 68gn or 75gn HDY BTHP.
hannie Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 40gr Vmax and Ramshot Blue Because I can use both the bullet and powder in both 223 and the FiveseveN
Silver Jack Hammer, SASS #56398 Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 Heavy bullets in the 69 - 75 grain range are only for rifles with a rate of twist 1:7. The .223 is sensitive bullet weight / rate of twist. Measure the rate of twist of your rifle with a cleaning rod marked with a piece of tape and go from there. The 55 gr Rem Core Lok gives you a lot of shots per dollar.
Capt. James H. Callahan Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 I use a hot charge of H-335. One of my uppers for my AR is a 10" shorty with a long flash hider. It's finicky, doesn't even like some factory loads (pressure curve is wrong I guess). The 335 works fine though. JHC
Guest Chief Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Twist rate make a lot of difference, 1/8 or 1/7 or faster twist use varget with 75 0r 80 gr bullet .
Iron Pony Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 My GP load for 223 in the AR is a good charge of WW748 and a 55gr FMJ bullet. I have an old quinetics brand powder measure that drops a very consistant charge and can do a loading tray of 50 in just a couple minutes while weighing every 10th charge to check weight. For the bolt gun the sierra matchking 69gr with Varget gets my vote.
Sergeant Smokepole #29248L Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 I have settled on Varget. It has a burn rate similar to IMR 3031 but meters like IMR 4198.... Clean, accurate.. Good combo with 55 grainers. Mt Savage Model 12 FV shoots half inch groups at 100 yards and 1 1/4 inchers at 200 with this combo....
Pulp, SASS#28319 Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 On the other side of the spectrum, I tried some of the reduced Trail Boss loads from Hodgdon's website. A bit hotter than a .22 Mag, and my granddaughter loved them. A good training round for report or recoil sensitive kids.
