I don't know about it being Nationwide, but it's that way in Florida.

Baycare has a 40% "discount" of their way overinflated prices if you're uninsured. I think it's that way statewide.

I was uninsured last year (2024). I had a doctor appointment in February2024. My doctor missed my appointment that HE made a year in advance, they rescheduled my appointment for the next week. I went, they had me see a Nurse Practitioner...not my regular doc who is an MD. This doctor visit was simply to keep my BP meds current and a normal checkup. Entire thing took 15 minutes, got billed for $505.00 ($2,000 per hour) of which they graciously took 40% off which made the bill $300 mol. I went round and round with the bean counters at Baycare about the outrageous bill without any luck or reduction of the bill.

I became eligible for Medicare late last year. My Baycare doctor's appointment (made a year ago) rolled around in February 2025. I purposefully missed the appointment without any cancellation notice. They didn't waste any time sending me a condescending missed appt. letter. Screw them. I have a new doctor and insurance, I'll see how that goes.

IMO, the medical profession is no longer about healing people.....it's strictly about making money, a bunch of money. Just took me a long time to realize it.

They have a deal with insurance companies that the insurance companies pay them a % of what they bill. When they bill the uninsured 60% they still get paid more than what the insurance companies would give them.  And if you don’t pay them they make out on the income tax.
