Ruger old Army

Last week I participated in the Michigan State shoot (Range War). I was shooting my Ruger old Army Cap and Ball Revolvers; I still have the original Ruger nipples in the guns. I am using Remington #10 caps of which 6 caps went of but failed to ignite the powder I was using 30 grains of Schuetzen 2F powder. I have never had this before, any idea or suggestions. I did between stages cleaned my nipples by pushing a needle through each nipple.

Lefty,

Perhaps the cylinder was damp or there was a moisture issue. I have had that happen to me in the past. Just part of the joys of shooting Frontiersman. I have been having an issue with one of my ROA,s and hopefully got that resolved with a heavier spring. Mine are setup with Slix Shot nipples.

Ruger factory nipples are good nipples.
One former National & World Champion Frontiersman I know uses them exclusively.

He told me that they fit Remington #11 caps.
These are the same dimensionally as Remington #10s, except that #10s have a deeper cup than #11s.

So, it is not the nipples

If the cap went off, but failed to ignite the powder, I would suspect a blockage of the nipple exit hole.
Did this happen on the first firing, or later in the match?

If it happened on the first firing, it is possible that the chambers were damp with water or residual oil from the last cleaning.
If it happened later in the match, that is probably not it.

When you cleared the nipple exit hole with a nipple pick, was it before or after you loaded up the cylinder?

I ALWAYS picked the nipples, but I did it after I loaded the cylinder, not before.

It was the last thing I did, before I re-installed the cylinder in the gun.

I did it every time!

It's amazing the junk that can get into the nipple, and block its exit hole.

Depending on the consistency of the spooge, it (the spooge) can stick to the Nipple Pic and come right back to the nipple opening.  If the Caps went bang, you had a problem at the nipple exit (see Prairie Dawg's post)

I always carry a can of condensed air in my cart. Then I can blow out the nipples before reload. Yes, I also have a needle-pick.  You can never be to certain.

when I clean mine the last thing i do is blow compressed air through them , and I have not had a problem .... but my brother has till he started doing this and now hopefully  he won't again . it also was the same brand of powder we think maybe it don't light off as easy as goex ??

Never had a problem with Schuetzen powder. I have also stopped snapping caps before I load my cylinders to shoot them as it will sometimes leave debris in the nipple. As mentioned earlier I use compressed air to make sure the nipples are clear when cleaning. Before loading before the first stage I clean the cylinders of ALL lube and blow out the nipples. I also load enough powder to clear the channel in the nipple when they are shot.

You weren't by chance using paper cartridges?  In my experiment with paper cartridges,  I found some paper ash left in the chambers. I had some failures to fire - sometimes after a couple of caps - until I poked the nipple really good. I resorted to clearing the chambers before recharging.

I’ve always done a visual check of each nipple after clearing the guns at the unloading table.  If you look carefully, you can see daylight through any nipple that isn’t blocked.

Thorough cleaning after a day’s shooting with boiling water followed by a physical clearing and inspection of each nipple and a complete wipe down has you ready for the next day!

Canned air or access to a compressor is also helpful.

If I can see daylight through the nipples and I do my part in correctly charging and capping each chamber, it’s extremely unlikely that I will have a misfire or other failure to fire.

YMMV!

The correct cap for the type of nipple is essential!
