I like that idea

People make dummy rounds. I have heard that you should color the brass, or you should drill holes in the case. So you can see at a glance that this is not a real live round.

An article I was just reading mentioned putting a baby DAMMIT otto, I SAID BB in the empty case. So you got a little steel ball in the case, held in place by the empty case on one end and the bullet on the other end. And when you pick it up it goes rattle rattle rattle.

So you don't have to look and see if it's bright red, or if there's holes in the side of the case. If you hear that BB rattling around in there you know it's a dummy.

I have made quite a few of these.  Drilling the case makes it immediately apparent, even to the novice that it is not real ammunition.  The BB does not do that since to the uninformed, it could be that live rounds rattle when shaken.  If you plan to use the dummies, fill the primer pocked with silicon caulk and trim smooth.

There is absolutely NOTHING made my man, that is truly IDIOT PROOF    I have action testing dummies that have no primer in the case.  I've been asked if I forgot to prime my re-loads!!  Trust me, STUPID is often a fatal affliction (with no cure).

In shotgun shells, use a pencil eraser. Acts as a snap cap (for a finite period of time) and an obvious dummy round. For the crimped end of the shell, use a medium sized drop of Plumbers Goop. Keeps the shot, or filler, in for a long time if used as a practice round.

The BB thing has been around for a long time, it was never really in the light before the Baldwin incident.

Personally, I wouldn't trust the BB dummy round theology for the reason Rip stated.

I had a 45/70 case with two holes drilled through it for use as a key fob until some mouth breathing knuckle dragging airport security guy decided it was dangerous and I had to toss it.

You want a replacement, PM me.  I have 45/70 set up on the bench.

For dummy rounds I use hard rubber o-ring material (Buna-n 70 durometer) in primer pockets.

6 mm is the prefect size for shotgun shells. Taper the end slightly and push into the primer pocket until it is protruding slightly into the hull. Then trim flush with a razor blade.

.177" (4.5 mm) for small primer pockets and .210" (5.33 mm) for large primer pockets.  All I do is drill out the primer pocket so that it still has a small lip. taper the end of the o-ring slightly, push it in past the lip, and then trim flush.

A 1/8' drill bit is perfect of small primer pockets and 3/16" works for large primers.

No glue is needed and the material will last forever.

To allow dummy SG shells to retain their shape without adding a lot of extra weight to the hull, I stuff it with a plastic grocery sack.  This adds very little weight to the hull so you don't develop bad shucking habits, yet it will still crimp properly and not collapse when inserted into a shotgun belt loop.  I make them from pink or orange hulls so that they stand out as very few shooters use these colors.

They really are idiots. I had one take my fingernail clippers and break off the file part and return it to me. Said it was against the policy to allow the nail file. Then back in the 90's I collected match books and had around 5 or 6 of them in my carry on and they said I had to pick 2, could not keep all 5/6. So I guess I wasn't going to be able to start a fire with just 2 books but 5/6 would be dangerous. They don't have a clue what they are doing.

One time I was traveling out of DIA in Denver and they were requiring us to get our laptops out and turn them on so they could see they were real. I ask why and they said it was required by the FAA. The guy behind me said that they needed to quit trying to make things up and blame the FAA since he was an Executive with FAA and that rule was bs. They went and got a supervisor and the heated argument was on. Needless to say the Exec had more pull and I am betting they reassigned the idiot TSA agent to Alaska or somewhere else less undesirable. LOL

IMHO, the worst of TSA just gets off on messing with folks.  I had one unpack an entire large camera bag down to the smallest item.  Since it was a major photo trip, lots of stuff.  Took me a bit to fit everything back.  I am at the point now between TSA and the Airline policies, I just drive.  I flew a couple of times as a boy, back in the late '50's and it was a joy.  In the intervening decades it has become an increasingly unpleasant experience.

JB Weld works good also :)

Most of the dummies I made were for a European relative who was a member of a Cowboy Club,  they didn't actually shoot, my understanding was that they had their own saloon and were into role playing.  Snap caps are fine, but after enough use will throw up a rim on the primer that has to be filed down occasionally.  Ugly as well!
