It's marked R-P 444 Marlin A 444 Marlin takes a .429 bullet and the case length is 2.225 The case I found has a .401 bullet and the case is 2.576, 3/8 of an inch longer. Does anyone know, is this an actual caliber, or did someone just get bored and wanted to see what would happen if you ran a 444 Marlin case into a 41 Mag die. Three Foot Johnson Posted May 13 Share Posted May 13 The .405 JES was/is a wildcat based on the .444 case, but used a .411 bullet. I remember reading about an Australian a decade back who was experimenting with necking the .444 down to .40 and calling it the .40-.444, of course. Still hand Bill Posted May 14 Share Posted May 14 There are a whole range of 444 based wildcats from JD Jones, 375, 358, 338, and 309. Had no heard of a 40 cal version. The JDJ wildcats all used the Marlin case to get similar performance to 308 based rounds, but in a rimmed case and low enough pressure to be safe in a contender.
