Sixgun Seamus Posted March 31, 2024 Posted March 31, 2024 Once joked to a cashier if the candy bar I was buying was still a nickle. She said I wasnt old enough to have ever bought a nickle candy bar. After thanking her for mis-guessing my youth, I told her I was old enough that I bought Black Jacks for 2 for a penny. She conceded to my antiquity. My favorites were Sugar Daddys and Bonomos Turkish Taffy.
Rip Snorter Posted March 31, 2024 Posted March 31, 2024 There used to be a penny candy counter. Had to be around 1950 I found a half dollar on the street. A quarter bought as much as three of us could eat.
Rye Miles #13621 Posted March 31, 2024 Posted March 31, 2024 I remember long pretzels 2 for a penny. Gumballs also 2 for a penny. Baseball cards a nickel a pack with a big piece of gum and all the candy bars were a nickel.
Subdeacon Joe Posted March 31, 2024 Posted March 31, 2024 I don't recall 10 for a penny, but I do remember the penny candy sticks. About 6 inches long, maybe 3/8" diameter. Rootbeer Barrels 2 for a penny. The little lawbreakers 5 for a penny, the big ones, 3/4", a penny each.

One of the ingredients was a nickel Hershey bar. It was a chocolate cake and after you frosted it you shaved the Hershey bar and put the chocolate shavings all over the icing. But the recipe called for a nickel Hershey bar.
