Because it looks cool.

There’s a slight weight difference between the stainless and blued pistols. By switching the parts over it brings the weights to within just a few ounces of eachother.

Ramped front sights are not legal in Frontiersman.  You were lucky you did not get DQ'd.

For me not knowing this...What does make a legal sight for this or any other cap and ball pistol...

I know the "ramped front sight" has been disputed before, but I don't remember what the outcome was. A ramped sight tapers sharply downward from the muzzle toward the cylinder, such as on a Blackhawk, but I don't know if the base itself constitutes a tapered ramp sight.

Shooter's Handbook, page 35.

Revolver – Fixed Sight Models

  • -  Fixed sight revolvers may only use traditional style, barrel mounted, fixed metallic foresights of a simple blade, bead, or post configuration.

  • -  A simple open notched rear sight cut into the frame, hammer, or latch mechanism is the only rear sight allowed.

  • -  Ramp style front sights are not allowed.

  • -  Beaded post front sights or inserts are not allowed.

Negative. These sights are not ramped. Please see above pictures.

The ramped part isn't in question at this point, but as Larsen Pettifogger posted above, Fixed sight revolvers may only use traditional style, barrel mounted, fixed metallic foresights of a simple blade, bead, or post configuration. The base is what disqualifies it, not the sight blade.

Looks like the blued one is illegal and the stainless one is okay.

It’s not in place ON the barrel is what they’re getting at. The spacer or stand off or remnant of a ramp is the illegal part.
