Pat Riot
Did the term “sucks” originate in the late 1800’s?
Subdeacon Joe
Depending on which word or phrase history you look at, it could go back as a derogatory comment to the early 1800s. I would, however, put that "quote" from later, say in the 1930s. Another one, one that stands up to scrutiny, "There are 40,000,000 men under arms in the world today, and our statesmen and diplomats have the temerity to say that war is not in the making. Hell's bells! Are these 40,000,000 men being trained to be dancers?" ("War is a Racket" 1935)

MizPete
I didn't start hearing 'sucks' in that context until the mid sixties.
J-BAR #18287
I was unfamiliar with Smedley Butler so I Googled him. He earned two Medals of Honor. If he did not really say this, he probably should have. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smedley_Butler

Pat Riot
Here are some real words of wisdom from Smedley Butler, and by golly, that man called it like he saw it. And I do not disagree with most of it. https://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/115545.Smedley_D_Butler

Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
His bio says there was a time early in his career when he had a problem with alcohol. Sounds like a Marine to me.
