While if they sit across from the fire, the smoke blows towards them. One needs to sit as much across the wind as possible to minimize getting smoked out, but "logic" suggests being upwind as much as possible.  But you are actually right, folks look pretty ugly with smoke in their faces so that will almost always be the ugliest person around a fire.  Someone actually figured this out for a doctoral thesis using math. A couple other interesting proven results...
