Recommended Posts

Howdy

Would love to own a Browning double ..virtually non existent in Australia..if around very hard to find.

Curious to know if all the models  can be slicked up for Cowboy or are some better than others.

There are 3 basic versions, 2 single trigger mechanically activated and 1 double trigger version. One single trigger is selective and the other is not. Either can be turned into excellent competition guns.

The other version is a double trigger sidelock that is rare and more expensive, and generally not used for SASS.

The single triggers usually have beavertail forearms with pistol grip sticks and the sidelock has a splinter forearm and often has an Enlish stock.

I have all 3 and personally prefer the non selective version with beavertail forearm and pistol grip stock.

I would also suggest you peruse your gun shops for "B. C. Moruku"  (spell?) shotguns.  Same Same.  Moruku makes the double guns for Browning.

Their plant made quality firearms and still do.   SKB's    BSS   Charles Daly to mention just a couple.  Now they make the latest Win 73       GW

The main model used for cowboy shooting is the Browning BSS single trigger, non selective.  Excellent double, very well built and reliable.  Light loads always work because it's a mechanical trigger switch rather than an inertial switch like SKBs.  Even dry firing is possible.

It's a heavy gun, especially compared to the Ithaca SKB.

And yes, another cheaper gun that is VERY similar to the BSS is the Charles Daly 500 or the Miroku 500.

Sometimes those might be easier to find.

But the Johnny Meadows route is best chance of finding one without wait.   And well tuned too!

Good luck, GJ

BSS means Browning Side by Side  - it's a model designation, and the three trigger options all fall within the BSS model.  And then for just a few years, Browning also sold a sidelock variant with the BSS model name.

Thanks for that GJ..Love the sidelocks [ very strong ] have a couple of U/O  sidelocks, wouldn't mind a double , are they hard to find, I imagine they would be expensive !
