I mentioned that I had heard that the American Indian believed that the "spirit" of the animal, when consumed, imparted his characteristics to the one consuming the animal. For example, a bear would be big, strong and brave. These would be important characteristics to a warrior. That led me to reflect on my own yout, and the summer days that I spent hunting squirrels in Southern Illinois hardwoods.
