Guest Pukin Dog, SASS#55356-Life Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 I've enjoyed Dickel #12 for years but today saw a Dickel #8 so bought it. Took it home and had a taste test (chomped on some peanuts in between to neutrulize my taste buds like them French wine fellers do with their crackers) and tried them straight and with a bit of ice also. I couldn't taste a whole lot of difference. Both were d@mn smooth for the price. I might have to stock both of them now. Does anyone have a preference of one over the other?? I may not be a fast shot, but i do love my whiskey after a long day of CAS shootin' :-)
Ugly, SASS #18106 Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Well Dog, I kinda like my Knob Creek but, a taste test sure sounds like a good idea at the Fandango or somewheres else.
Doc Fill 'Em 67797 Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 For an inexpensive bourbon I like Evan Williams 1783, cheap but good. Quantity over quality! For a better one I like Bulliet Bourbon. If I can find it, I like Rye whiskey. Not too many out there, though.

The Evan Williams Reserve. 10 or 12 year old and Gooooooddddddd!!!!!!!!! Evan Williams is my "Daily" whiskey. Usualy, when I head to a big shoot where I'll be camping for a few days, I pick up a bottle of Crown Royal to sip with said friends. Funny thing, when I have the CR I always have more friends, LOL!!! I try a few diferent "Top Shelf" whiskeys every year, and have found that I like most anything that's 10 yrs old or more. Been working on a bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey for a month or so, and truthfuly, I'm not much impressed with it. Not any better than the 7 yr Evan Williams. Kids gave me a bottle of CR for Christmas today, will take it to NC with me and probibly open it Christmas Eve at the kid's home. Been wanting to try a bottle of the Crown Royal Reserve, but just can't afford it right now. (Hint, hint, Christmas is comming soon!!!) Got a bottle of Gentleman Jack last Christmas. That was good. I drink a lot of Ginger Brandy in the winter, mixed with Ginger Ale and warmed for 30 sec in the microwave. Got a bottle of Evan Williams Honey Whiskey here now been mixing it with water and just a touch of lemon, then warming it a bit and sipping it. Like the stuff Dad used to mix for us kids in the winter for a sore throat or cough. I gues I just like Whiskey. The more the better. And the older, the better. Older is better straight or just over ice, cheep is good mixed with Coke or Ginger Ale, it's all good somehow. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you. Greeenriver
WymoreWrangler SASS 46187L Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Spoken like a true Naval Aviator...LOL
three by eight Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 I still like Gentleman Jack on the rocks number 1 will drink Maker's Mark have done Bulliet Bourbone its good to Been on a Tequlla kick Asom Broso good !!! Hey Step-n-mud miss my Lone Star ! 2x4
Frio Kid, SASS #31915 Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 I would save my money on the CR Reserve it is too sweet, regular CR is better. Knob Creek is best. But Evan Williams and Dickel are good at a lower cost ( I hate to say cheap when referring to whiskey).
Bucky Buscadero, SASS #73085 Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Both have that same excellent distinctive flavor. But prefer the #12. I like the extra bite of 90 proof vs 80 proof. Course if we're ever sitting around a campfire and Old No. 8 is all that's available I will indulge with gusto and a smile regardless! Another good whiskey is Basil Hayden. Great flavor and really smooth.
Boon Doggle Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Haven't touched that nasty stuff in a while, but... Weller & Weller 12 Year Old, Jim Beam Black, and Jack Black all were pretty darn good. If memory serves correctly. Maybe if I hadn't sampled so much, memory would serve correctly.
Mordis Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Hmm. i want to put together a little bar in my home. I just want a mix of good spirits and am having a hard time picking out which to put on what shelf. I have tried regular jack and liked the start but didnt like the after taste. I havnt yet tried gentle men or single barrel, anyone care to tell me the difference? I have only tried one topish shelf spirit and that is Woodford Reserve. I dont know which shelf it belongs on but it tastes goood and very smooth. I would like to try wild turkey and wild turkey rare breed, and makers mark and knob creek and buffalo reserve(i think thats the name). Anyone care to tell me which shelf they belong on? Like i said i want to put together a good sampling of ultra premium and premium topshelf and mid and low shelf wiskeys. Can anyone tell me Any good rye whiskeys, i see a few different brands around and would love a sampling of them, also arranged according to proper shelf placement. About the types of whiskeys, are blends considered lower quality and lesser beings then single barrels? So, who are the ultra premiums, the premium top shelfs and the mid and lower tier whiskeys? Would love some guidance on this, before i make mistakes in purchasing.
Dick Dastardly SASS #45219 Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 Geo Dickel is fine whiskey. I've enjoyed a taste or more with you PD. Will enjoy some more come spring. I don't discriminate between the numbers but I do like good ice with it. Not refrigerator ice cubes, but nice clear ones. Or else, straight up with a good German beer for wash. Yup, cabin fever is settin' in already. DD-DLoS

As far as a good rye, Russel's Reserve is pretty tasty. For Whiskey's I try to stay in the $20 a bottle range and so far I've found that George Dickel #12, Russel Reserve Bourban, Buillet, and Evan Williams single barrel reserve are very excellent. I do have a taste for Jack Daniels and Foresters Reserve also. Always looking for that fantastic $12 bottle though. LOL
Henry T Harrison Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 As I finished up teaching a Kenpo class tonight the mother of one of my students slipped me a bottle of Knob Creek. I will enjoy that immensely while sitting in the hot tub this weekend. HTH

Mad Monte McCrae SASS #61622 Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 I really enjoy Buffalo Trace and W.L. Weller both are really smooth. The main difference is Weller uses wheat instead of rye gives a complete different taste.

Greeenriver I've been working on a inexpensive(under $30), good Irish Whiskey selection for several months. My reason for the Irish over the American whiskey/whisky is that I don't particularly like the intense burn. Irish does not do that to me. Anyway, I've settled on either Powers or Tullamore Dew. I didn't think anything could get me off of the Dew until I got a bottle of Powers. Pretty smooth stuff. I sold a farm one cold winter afternoon with a pint of Evan Williams and a warm pickup cab.
Korupt Karl Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 I am an ex-whiskey drinker, and before my health issues I enjoyed a glass of Woodford Reserve. Jack would do in a pinch and if I was on a budget I drank Jim. I even had a bit of Beam Rye with a friend Lucius. Can't do it anymore since the stroke, but I encourage you gentlemen to have one or two for me...lol. KK
Billy Boots, # 20282 LTG-Regulator Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 It says Kerr or Mason on the jar and I like to carry it in a sock. Good to tickle ya in'nerts, and with enough, make ya act real stupid and worse.
Mustang Gregg Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 Mr Dickel makes a fine spirit. And I sure like Old No 7 from Jack Daniel. It ain't just for sippin', neither.... We also use in in several recipes. Bourbon walnut brownies or Bourbon Blizzard, anyone??? Merry Christmas, Mustang Gregg
Dang It Dan 13202 Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 My very favorite is............THE FREE KIND!!! I have been around the bin and back, so I will keep this short and sweet. Knob Creek is my current curse. Buillet has a nice "edginess" to it. I have been wanting to try the new Jim Beam Black. Maker's Mark, I don't know, drank it for about a year but then it lost it's flavor for me - i dunno about that one.

Some people said they like my karoke performance. course most of them had been in the Copperhead juice too.
Coyote Kid, SASS#54714 Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 Well yall, In reply to Mordis, I really enjoy Templeton Rye. It's still the same recipe they bootlegged during prohibition in a small town in Iowa. If it was good enough for Al Capone, when he had it snuck into Alcatraz, it's fine with me. Coyote Kid
