I too use charcoal in my 45-70, but grits in my 45colt. The finest charcoal I could find when GJ recommended it to me was a 20-50 screen. A lot of those chunks are quite large! What are you using and where did you source it?

For a stud finder that you won't use a lot, I'd buy one good Energizer battery and take it out when not using and keep with the tool. If it's been a while since last use, check early enough before your next project. Odds are if you go for a multi pack, they'll be dead too when you need one!
They passed it a year ago here in Vermont . While they want you to save fossil fuels and carbon footprint, you now get to make the 2 hour round trip to the LGS twice. Gonna put an end to Gun shows as we knew them too.
They are, but send one to Slater and you won't be able to stop shooting til the brick of ammo is gone ! Mine was done by Mr. Widder hisowndangself and the trigger by Slater. Slater does the whole job now.
