Hayfever Hart, 112539 Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 I need some help. A fellow long distance shooter has just gotten a sharps trapdoor in 45-70. I figured I would reach out to MVA to find out which model soulle he needs. Here is their reply: “Your tang is too short and narrow for any of our bases. You will need to inlay a piece of metal into the stock to be able to mount a base and staff.” So, with that in mind is there anyone else who sells long range sights for trapdoors? His tang is on 2 1/4” long and 1/2” wide. Are there any other options out there for mounting or other sight types or do we need to do what MVA suggested. Thanks all

Hoss Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 Does the rifle have the original barrel sight? the Buffington sight, while not as precise as a MVA Soule sight, is a good option. And they look cool! Depending on distances you plan on shooting might be sufficient. Certainly good to 250-300 yds. If you are wanting to get much past that might be more of a challenge. https://www.armscollectors.com/trapdoor/TrapdoorSights.html
Kid Rich Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 The Buffington sight is good for 2000 yds. kR

Lead Monger Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 I’ve seen pictures of the Marbles tang sights for the Savage 99 adapted to mount on the tang of a trapdoor. The long curved base of the Marbles moves the staff back on the wrist closer to the eye without being inlet into the wood. Could be useful if you can’t see through a Buffington.
Bailey Creek,5759 Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Could extend the tang a few inches. Then drill and tap.

Sedalia Dave Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 The length of the tang is not the problem. The issue is that the sight has to clear the hammer at full cock and the sight has to drop low enough to that you can replicate the sight picture of the original sights. Meeting both of the above criteria is a tall order. Mostly because the windage knob of every sight worth having will interfere with the hammer.
