I think that back in the day their rate went from Ordinary Seaman to Able Seaman. 

 

(I'm likely wrong,  but I sort of recalling reading that a few decades ago)

I seem to recall there was a primer or method for learning the lines and knowing what lines were for what reason. It was something we were told in Naval History classes in Boot Camp.
