Blackwater 53393 Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 Spam can be had in several flavors and in turkey as well!  Vegemite is, well, Vegemite.  It might make a decent fertilizer, if it don’t kill what you’re planting with all that salt!  Â
Pat Riot Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 SPAM in a can makes a great target with expanding ammunition. Afterwards, when the sun is going down, the smell of the SPAM attracts coyotes. We just sat at the fire and watched about a dozen coyotes eat up all the little chunks and bits of that crap.   Yes, we picked up all the metal. We always left our shooting / camping spot clean.Â

We always left our shooting / camping spot clean. Spam is a very expensive target at that. Any VN vets remember Spam was a delicacy in general mess halls? The 5 months I with a 13E20 MOS was assigned to a Signal Co. because I operated as the broadcast engineer for the pirate radio station the 25th ID got from the 11th ACR when they left An Loc, I learned that there was more than roast beef available in 3 Corps. Spam, chicken and steak was available but was distributed to officer's mess and the personnel located on the top of Nue Ba Dinh (Black Virgin Mountain). Every square foot from the wire to the base of the mountain was controlled by Charlie. The platoon also ran a MARS radio station so the platoon Sargent had a deal with the Sargent that ran the S4 at the base that for foods not available in the mess hall a weekly call to the S4 Sargent's wife would be made & the S$ Sargent would be called when a connection was made. Everybody else had to wait in the MARS station waiting room while contact was made and if the atmospherics weren't favorable it would be wasted time. MARS uses frequencies just above or below Ham HF bands.
Subdeacon Joe Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Cut Spam about half an inch thick, thin out some Vegemite with a little water and brush it on the Spam.  Bake at 350°F about 20 minutes.  Great on Kings Hawaiian Rolls or sourdough.Â
Blackwater 53393 Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Bake up some nice buttermilk biscuits and slice pepper jack or sharp cheddar into squares about the size of your biscuits.  Slice up some ripe tomato and sprinkle it lightly with coarse sea salt and fresh ground black pepper.  Slice Spam a quarter inch thick and while the biscuits are baking, slow fry it to a light golden brown.  As soon as your biscuits are done, snatch ‘em out of the oven, split them open with a fork and put a large pat of butter on each one, followed by a slice the Spam, a slice of cheese, and top it with a slice of tomato.  Give it time to melt the butter and cheese and add your choice of condiment if you desire.  Great for breakfast or a snack anytime!!

T.K. Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 Cut up the SPAM into 1/2" cubes. Dice up some taters snd onions fry in a skillet until golden brown. Â This was a standard fare my Dad made whenever we went camping. Us kids gobbled it up! Yum! Â I still eat SPAM every so often.
