Dantankerous
Today I found a LNIB nickle finished, 44-40, 5 inch Schofield at a local gun store. Beautiful! Heavier built than the Smith and Wesson PC Schofield I had. Definitely a solid and tight firearm. Is this combination of finish, caliber and barrel length somewhat on the scarce side? I was tempted, but would most likely not ever compete with it. Still, would make a fun gun! Appreciate any insight into this model.
Rooster Ron Wayne
I'm not 100% . But I think that pretty rear setup . I'm interested if you pass on it . Rooster
Warden Callaway
I'm confused, ( as I am more often.) Did you buy it or studying the situation? Mine's not Taylor's but Cimarron , no nickel but blued, and not a Schofield model but a #3 and 5" and 44WCF. Like it a lot. Shot it with black powder with no problems.
Dantankerous
Currently studying the situation, Warden. 😁 I was thinking this combo is not all that common. Not that I'd compete with it but it sure looks like a decent potential addition to the collection. To sport it up with this shiny nickle finish I'd need new gunleather with plenty of spots and silver and probable matching chaps. See how this can steamroll and get out of control? RRW, I'll let you know if I pass.
DeaconKC
I have a Blue 5" Schofield in .45 Colt and love shooting it. The 5" is really nicely balanced.
H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619
Dantankerous.... I assume that the pistol you found is made by Uberti. I have one of theirs in .45 Colt, as well as a Third Model Schofield made by S&W in .45 S&W. The Uberti pistol is a much more "accurate" recreation of the original pistol than the one made by S&W, but both are pretty decent guns. Having one in .44-40 would be rather cool as it's great caliber. I have a S&W New Model 3 in .44-40, and it would be nice to have a modern S&W type gun in the caliber, American, Schofield or New Model 3, doesn't matter to me. I don't think you can go wrong. Warden, do you have a picture of that whole gun? It looks like a New Model 3. I didn't know anyone was making a replica of that model And, I can't ask for pics without providing... On the left is the Uberti, and the right is the S&W. Not sure why I made this pic with the 87, but go fig.

Warden Callaway
I'm an impulse buyer. A couple of my favorite toy stores turned over the guns. If you wanted it, you better buy it. Mary pondered a bit unless it was Marlin 1894 Cowboys. I'm not going to say how many she bought but like some women and shoes.
Rooster Ron Wayne
I had zero No.3's at the start of 2024 . Now I have 4 different No.3's and have come to luv the gun design. What a beautiful pistol . I will always be a Colt Open Top fan . But the No.3's have really grown on me
irish ike, SASS #43615
I own a pair in 44-40 with 7" barrels, blued. Mine have had the internals re-worked to allow slip hammering. Also makes shooting them dualist easier. Finger can stay on the trigger. Getting ready to sell them.

Who did you find to do the work on the internals? I shot Schofields for almost 10 years but the ones that I found that knew how, were retired so I never was able to get it done. I don't now anyone else that can do it.

Bill English, AKA Happy Trails. He's a great guy and a fantastic smith. But yeah, he's retired now. I remember once I had him repair a Colt M1894 that was out of time. He got it perfect. And then he told me that if I ever get another one, please, take it to someone else. 1
