17 year old me marched onto the Plain at West Point, raised my right hand, and swore “to uphold and defend the Constitution”.

The Army career didn’t work out according to plan, but I never rescinded the Oath.

Drinks on me today, friends.

Make mine coffee, black, no sugar, military strength.

The coffee you could use on a cleaning patch when you ran out of bore solvent?

On 6 June 1965, I graduated from college. To get our diplomas we had to turn in our caps and gowns. It was pretty warm, so I only wore a pair of blue trousers and a blue shirt under the gown and a blue necktie.  Having turned in the stuff, I immediately headed for my car, leaned in and retrieved my blouse and flight cap, then headed over to the AFROTC building, where I raised my right hand and swore before the colonel commanding the detachment to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States," and the rest of the oath. I also have never rescinded that Oath, in uniform or out!  I may disagree with someone, but unless they propose destruction of the Constitution and the United States of America or anyone because of race, creed or religion, I will defend to the death their right to express themselves.

God Bless the United States of America! :FlagAm:

Charlie,

I never realized what a "child" you are. When you marched onto the Plain, I was 2 years from retirement.

Good on ya Lad!

And while you were adjusting to oatmeal, Jeopardy at 7:00, and early to bed, I was flying the Iron Curtain until Gorbachev, Thatcher, Reagan, and John Paul II changed history for the better and it all came down.  ;-)

And others stand watch tonight for all us fogies. May God be with them all.
