Alpo Posted May 22, 2024 Posted May 22, 2024 For those who read or watched, or both, Harry Potter, you may recall that there were a pair of Indian sisters. East Indian not American Indian. In the Goblet of Fire they went to the Yule Ball. And they were dressed, to my eyes, in some sort of Indian outfit. This link is to a blog by an Indian woman and she is thoroughly bent over the way they dressed these two girls. Things I never considered because I don't know how Indian people dress. https://www.kahanidigital.com/blog/cultural-performance-in-harry-potter I've seen many threads about how they got the guns wrong in movies. Threads about how they got the cars wrong in movies. Threads about the airplanes being wrong. Like I said, it's nice to know it's not just us. And she brought up some good points. Those girls are not Indian. They're British. They're British of Indian ancestry, but they're British. Why would they go to the dance in an Indian costume? Why wouldn't they go in a ball gown? There were several black girls in the movie. Having these two go in Indian costume makes as much sense as having the black girls show up at the ball wearing dashikis. Because they're black, so they need to dress African. I had never thought of that.
Michigan Slim Posted May 22, 2024 Posted May 22, 2024 I'm pretty glad I can say that I have never thought of that either!
watab kid Posted May 22, 2024 Posted May 22, 2024 im always in the dark aboit most cultures dress or culinarily preferences but because im that callus american , eho cares so little of all other cutures that i send all my tax mpney and open my boarders , i rebuild the countries that went to war with me after i won , i could give a rats as$ as to what they wear , its getting hard to decide of frolks are wearing the right attire these days most everywhere except a cowboy event
Black Angus McPherson Posted May 22, 2024 Posted May 22, 2024 Sounds like somebody who is just looking for something to complain about. How do you know they are not Indian? Is it explained somewhere in their backstory that they are British? Even if they are "British" is it not possible that they (the characters, not the actors. The actors origins should be irrelevant) have some Indian heritage? Are they, for some reason, not allowed to be proud of that heritage and show it in the form of their dress? Blacks in this country regularly wear clothing that show some form of African heritage. Glad to hear the blogger got bent about it. That would be my comment to her if I had read her whiney blog - "Get bent" P.O.O.P. People Offended by Offended People

My growing up was centered on our church and my dad's VFW post. Church functions - KoC work parties, cookouts, various holiday parties- were multi-national. Same for the VFW. We had people with Basque, Italian, Irish, Eastern European, Mexican, French, Californio (slightly different than Mexican), Polynesian, Japanese, Dutch, so holiday potlucks had everything under the Sun. Yeah, the "foreign" dishes tended to be Americanized, but you would find halupki cheek-by-jowl with chili con carne next to potstickers which were the lasagna alongside colcannon. Friday fish fries, well, those were pretty much fried fish, coleslaw, and boiled potatoes - HEY! it was a Catholic parish. Being close to Camp Pendleton, in 1975 we had an influx of Vietnamese adding their flavors and clothing. The Germans, Swedes, and Norwegians tended to stick to Lutheran churches. We went to some of their ethnic heritage festivals. Talent shows at parties would find step dancers, mariachi and folklorico dancers, Polynesian dancers, barbershop quartets, lord knows what else. Looking back on it, Vista was pretty darned multi-cultural. Never really thought of it before. Now the Orthodox parish we attend has Americans, Romanians, Serbians, Mexicans, a few Arabs, Eritreans, Russians, Georgians (old world), Finns, not sure what else. All the Greeks go down to Novato. The Bulgarians go to a different parish in town. Most of the Arabs went on to start other parishes, one Antiochian, one under Jerusalem. A couple of years ago we had a Norwegian priest visiting for about a year for training.
Texas Lizard Posted May 23, 2024 Posted May 23, 2024 If I was half a century younger, I would chase them...Would not even throw them out for eating crackers...Might put a smile on my face...But at my time in life, I can look and dream.... Texas Lizard

Yes, other than the South, the federal government has rebuilt everyone. i guess i was more affective than i planned with that reply , but hey i even surprise myself once in a while , but im no archie bunker , yes - the south , instead the carpetbaggers descended upon us and stole from their fellow American's , that whole affair was a sad bit of history and why im all for remembering it for both sides , not to glorify one or the other but to remember that we were all Americans , as to the other - i had a Japanese war bride as an aunt , she and i bonded quite well , my wife grew up in japan so we have a bit of that food in common as well as the clothing and much of our homes décor , my father participated in the bombing of the Japanese islands into submission , he never saw fit to hold a grudge so i grew up open minded , my daughter played international volleyball , we had a bunch of her foreign teammates living in our home over that period from time to time , my inlaws spent a lot of time in Paraguay and we had a lot of South Americans at our thanksgiving events over those years , my wifes family is German and Czech , mine is German and Scottish , i was married before - to a Norwegian and an Irish descendent , and on top of all that we have a good number of friends that were associated with the local college that exposed us to a highly diverse crowd from their interactions that we were invited to , im sure ive missed something but its not important i just wanted you to know since you thought i was limiting in my earlier comments that were meant to be just the opposite of what they seemed ........as sheldon might note -sarcasm ?

VERY effective. I'm fairly sure that you will agree that what I wrote is only a slight exaggeration of some of the comments that have graced these pages, and that I read in other fora.
