Reacher S2 lawful order?

Recommended Posts

Ok, having been a MP both enlisted and later commissioned, and a 30+ career in law enforcement, I was left wondering about a scene in Reacher.

Reachers commanding officer ordered him and his unit to stop an ongoing investigation involving criminal activity.
I’m leaning to believe this was an unlawful order, especially after the reasons the commander gave, he didn’t want to besmirch an outgoing commander’s reputation.
But he also ordered him to change some of the involved soldiers with much lower offences.

I suppose before taking any action I would seek counsel from the post JAG.
What do you all think?

I know that is SOP for todays Military .  There are several cases of Ranking officers accused of several crimes against them being swept under the carpet . I mean no one really cares that a General in the Air Force flew a military plane under the influence :)

After a certain point (rank) everything is political.

They couldn't prosecute or cashier but there are other ways to make disfavor known.

With VERY few exceptions, (Maj General "Chesty" Puller, Patton, and the like), any Officer above the rank of Lt. Col. is more of a politician than a warrior.

Another Reacher question, you don’t mind if I hijack you’re thread do you? In episode 6, about 20 minutes in, an officer is giving Major Reacher some crap and says of a bunch of guys one will go to the brig and all will get honorable discharges.

First, would an Army officer even say ‘brig’? I can believe ‘Leavenworth’ even though there are many such places. Maybe even ‘stockade”, perhaps even ‘disciplinary barracks’ since I think he is MP. His rank insignia wasn’t obvious.

Second, if one has been given a punishment which lands him in ‘the brig’ or some such, can he get an honorable? It’s TV so they play footloose and fancy free with scripts.

Alpo, sorry to step on your turf with such questions but it’s been two weeks and you didn’t ask.

I don't watch Reacher. How would I know what they did two weeks ago?

Now the main question I have is why hasn't anybody told him that this show is fiction? That it's Hollywood? That it's not real? You tell me that crap every time I ask a question about a TV show or a movie.

I was a Brig/ legal escort for about a year so Yes, a Army officer would refer to it as a Brig.

Part 2 , yes you can still receive a Honorable discharge if you are sent to confinement in the brig . Not all Court Martials result in a discharge.

I haven’t asked you why you post stupid questions in years.

Frankly you are the King of stupid questions. I saw something, I read something, or best yet I had this dream where I…
