He became a helicopter pilot after receiving flight training at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He also completed Ranger School. During the early 60s, he was stationed in West Germany as a member of the 8th Infantry Division. It was during this time that he resumed his music career and formed a band. He put on the "uniform" and served his country during trying times. Just know I enjoy his music and acting in films. And especially his contribution to the "Highwaymen" group, Kris, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash. Doesn't get much better than that group of boys. Maybe didn't have the greatest voice, but his song writing was fantastic. Look at how many singers have made tons of money recording his songs.
