slk Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 Has anyone done the conversion from 3 click to 4 click with the conversion kit for the model P pre-war? I was told the kits were available from Cimarron but they are pricy to me. Wonder if they can be bought elsewhere? Or am I better off getting the kit direct from Cimarron??? Thanks Steve
Old Man Graybeard Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 Try VTI Gunparts. I don’t know if they will be any cheaper. You could also try Taylors
Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 I don't know what Cimarron charges, but if the same as VTI, then you can get it much cheaper from Taylors or Longhunter: https://www.longhunt.com/storelh/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=424
Rooster Ron Wayne Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 I know when uberti first started this . I seen the righting on the wall and bought two triggers and two hammers for in the future if I ever ended up with something I wanted to keep that was three click I could change it over . But realistically Colt was three click on all the Cap Guns long before the C.O.L.T four click . Just sayin. Rooster
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 It is a fairly straight forward "drop in" conversion. As mentioned above, parts can be had from Cimarron, Taylors, VTI gunparts and Longhunter. Understanding, they are ALL hawking Uberti parts. Shop for your best price and remember to include what "they" charge for shipping and handling. Parts ain't cheap regardless of where you source 'em. They will ALL be within a few bucks of one another.
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 Ah cummon Rooster. A "three click" Cap Gun bears no real relationship to a "four click" SAA. Cap Guns never hand and still don't need any kind of "Drop Test" hammer safety thingie. Suppository Shooters, on the other hand, do have a stupid "drop test" for import approval. And that stupid Uberti "retracting firing pit" is the stupidest drop test safety ever. Bestest solution to the problem is PIETTA you betcha.
Warden Callaway Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 Sadly, I've got enough old style 4 clickers to do me for years. But i did change out the stupid two notch base pins.

Colorado Coffinmaker Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 WELL - Ah Hem . . PLUS ONE for Phantom - Most appropriate. Abilene!! OOPS!! Obviously, I haven't shopped VTI since the ownership change and move to sunny Florida. Thatza Lotza Difference Amazing what happens when one burns one's shingle and isn't ordering parts by the barrel for a couplea years

I was really amazed at the price when Taylors started selling those kits a few years ago, couldn't figure out how they got them priced that much lower.
slk Posted November 23, 2023 Author Posted November 23, 2023 What is you guys honest opinion on converting them to 4 click? Do they actually preform any better? I did not even realize that they had started making them 3 click until my last one in 45lc came in and i started comparing it to my 32-20’s that i had bought just a couple of years before and they are 4 click. I do like that first click.
Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 A few folks have had some light strikes with the retractable firing pin 3 clicker. You may notice that the trigger is further forward in the triggerguard on the new one. Recently, on another forum Cheyenne Logan made a post that I thought was very interesting: "I have one Uberti which had the 3 click hammer, never had trouble with misfiring, but did not like the amount of overtravel the trigger had once the sear released.......you could feel the sear release, though I pulled through, my youngest was constantly have misfiring problems, and it was easily duplicated by stopping the trigger pull after you felt the sear release.......changed out with standard old style parts, upside is no worries about light strikes, and an improved trigger pull." So, technique may be involved in this as well.
Rooster Ron Wayne Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 I never said it was the same action or that I liked it. I just said Colt started out at three click action long before they had the four click action. Like I said I bought parts long ago to change the new 3 click back to the old 4 click action . So far I have never bought any guns that was the new 3 click action. Rooster
Warden Callaway Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 I could live without the first click "safety notch" because I never use it. It's the floating firing pin and extra parts I don't want. 5 beans in the wheel is enough.
Diamond Jake Posted November 24, 2023 Posted November 24, 2023 I used to have two Ubertis with the retractable firing pin. I bought the conversion kit from Taylors to try it out. On the first gun, the parts "dropped in" and functioned, but it was a little rough and the timing was slightly off. Then I put that gun back to stock and tried the conversion kit in the second gun. It worked flawlessly and timing was spot on. Moral of the story: Be prepared to do a little fine tuning to get the action and timing right.
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted November 24, 2023 Posted November 24, 2023 slk Just from a strictly mechanical point of view, the stoopid (quote phantom) retractable firing pin constitutes more unnecessary moving parts to collect gun spooge and stop working, just when you need them to work. Then we have the information provided by Cheyenne Logan (quoted by Abilene) indicating the shooters technique may have a large effect. If your a "slow, methodical, squeezer" your apt to have more problems then a "slapper." Based on the above, replacing the hammer and trigger to eliminate that Stoopid (quote Phantom again) safety thingie is money well spent. Recent postings would also indicate Cimarron is trying to change Uberti's mind. Time will tell

Time will tell Well, I'm not too sure about that. I was at Shot Show with Cimarron when Uberti first showed them the new hammer and said it was going to be the "new thing." What I was told at the time was that Uberti paid liability insurance on the guns they made (there have been lawsuits in the past from guns going off when dropped by idiots and even a death). I expect their insurance price would go down with the new system. But they said they would not pay the liability insurance on the guns any more unless they had their new "safety hammer". Does this mean Cimarron is paying the liability insurance now on the certain 4-click models that they still import? I can't say. They are always negotiating with Uberti on this or that. But I wouldn't hold my breath for the standard line of Pre-War Model P's going back to 4-click. But like Coffinmaker says, "Time will tell." However, there might be just as much chance that those certain 4-clicker models will go away so ALL of their guns will have the safety. Meanwhile, sales of Piettas from all importers rise. I'm happy that their BP-framed Model P's are still 4-click. I bought a charcoal blue Cavalry model a couple years ago partially because I always wanted one and partially because I wanted to get it while they were still 4-click. And even though I like the Old Model frame fine, even better really than Pre-War just because of the more period correct style that I prefer, I am unhappy that Cimarron now carries the Old Model in only 3 calibers, .45 .357 and 44-40. If you want 32-20 or 38-40 or 44 Spcl you have to buy the Pre-War 3-clicker (although a 44 special cylinder could be bought for an old model 44-40). And Pietta doesn't make any of those calibers.
Rooster Ron Wayne Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 I gotta say . This past year I purchased my first Pietta Great Western ll revolver and it has 4 clicks and as nice or nicer action as Any single action I have ever played with . So Uberti is no longer the Top Player in the game as far as Colt clones go . Rooster
Rye Miles #13621 Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 I have one Uberti Cattleman that has the hammer safety, it's a backup gun but I do have around 500 rounds through it with no problem. I have 4 Colts that I shoot regularly.

My biggest issue with the Ubertis was the bolt spring breaking; it happened on two of the three Ubertis I owned. All three are gone now, and I have 4 Pietta Great Westerns. One more and I'll be ready to shoot Josey Wales.
Rooster Ron Wayne Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 I just stumbled upon this and thought I would share it here .

Still 3 click because the hammer still has no safety notch, but he defeated the safety so the firing pin stays forward.
