Cowboy Caravans?

Recommended Posts

Does any club members or groups of cowboys (w/ or w/o their spouses) travel together across country in RVs for the purpose of seeing the country and shooting at different clubs along the way? Not necessarily just for the main matches but to shoot at different remote clubs. Maybe trips as long as a month or more long.

My wife and are retired and are trying to travel more to see the country, and it seems like this would be fun to travel with some other shooters, especially since none of our close friends do not camp or do CAS.

Just curious of how many members/clubs might be doing this in Caravan type situations.

Our club has two couples who travel to matches together and camp next to each other.  A surprise benefit has been them helping each other when their rigs broke down on remote highways.  They don't travel together months on end.

RV Parks near major matches are often full of CAS shooters.  The clays center campground at EOT has more CAS campers than clays campers.

Sounds like fun. My wife and I took a month long trip 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. We were by ourselves but still had a good time. I shot in Cheyenne, WY and then we stayed in Denver, CO for a few days after leaving Cheyenne then we went over to Moab, UT for a week before heading up to Price, UT and shooting the CastleGate Bank Robbery match. Then we went back to Colorado for a few more days before finally heading back to Texas. It would have been more fun with a group but was still an enjoyable trip.

Hello From Iowa,

To address your primary question to the best of my knowledge there is no organized caravan of people going from one range to the next.   I have often wished the same wanting other couples to travel with from time to time.  With that said my wife and I spend about 40% of the year on the road going from one range to the next participating at shoots all over the Midwest and Western US.  Not to say we don’t go east, we do, but seem to go North, South and West more.  For us spring and Fall are the busiest, shortly here in August we will be making a tour of South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota, putting us on the road for nearly 30 days, shooting every weekend in a new location, weekdays we find some campground to stay at as we both still work, but fortunately can work from the road for the most part, and despite work look for local adventures to do during the week when we don’t have or nose to the grind stone.  In the end we still use our home in the tiny town of Livermore, Iowa as a home base to launch the next adventure from.  Here at home we have full facilities for 2 fellow road warriors to stay with us heading outbound on a trip, on the way home, or just need a friendly cheep place to stay between shoots,.  If you find yourself in Iowa look us up.  The unfortunate aspect of where we live, we do have to travel to shoot, and not uncommonly a couple hours, but we do shoot most every weekend, and often both Sunday and Saturday, as a good friend likes to say it’s only a little diesel fuel and time.  If you do set out on an adventure and are not already familiar with Harvest Hosts / BoonDockers Welcome I would strongly encourage you to investigate the organization as we both host travelers here, and actively use other hosts when we are traveling.  Hope to see you on the road it is a grand adventure.

Years ago The T bone Dooley gang traveled to matches in a 1988 bluebird bus just Imagine the toys they can Tell !!

The Dooley Gang had a fairly large entourage when they travelled to EOT in New Mexico and man did they know how to party. They had a camp about like a small city and live music or canned music was on tap every night. Great times.

We have also done the same, and are going to be traveling again in September to New Mexico. We will stop and shoot in Arcadia OK on the way out, and on the way back will shoot in Byhalia MS and at the SE Regional in AL. We will be in Albuquerque during their State Match but are not shooting due to visiting family there that weekend. It would be nice to have a group to travel with ..... not that I'm getting tired of my wife :)

I am familiar with Harvest Hosts / BoonDockers Welcome but have never used them. Maybe to organize a caravan I would need to decide where we wanted to go and reach out on the forum to anyone interested in tagging along. Travel and shoot together, but can always go different directions as far as excursions / site-seeing between shoots. Obviously it would work better with people in your region to get started.

KR, That's exactly what I am talking about. I'm sure was a fun trip.

We are already starting to plan our trip for next year. I plan on going to EOT in Phoenix next year and my wife runs marathons and wants to run one in Sedona at the beginning of Feb so we plan on being out west for at least a month if not longer. I am checking to see what other matches are in the area so we can stay around AZ for most of Feb if possible without having to travel too far from Phoenix.
