Yul Lose
Doc Clint is a scammer. If you post your email address or phone number or other information on this forum he’ll try to get to you!!!!
Eliphalet R. Moderator
If you are buying or selling items on the Classified Forum, check your profile and delete your email address if you added it under any of the "Contact Methods" or any other place in your public profile. You are making yourself a target for scammers. They do not have to be Wire Members to see your email address and try to rip you off.
Cholla
I think we also need to be mindful of what we post in forums. I often see members posting their contact information in threads. It doesn't take much detective work for a scammer to find that information and use it to contact the person or impersonate someone else. Scammers can make their phone numbers appear as someone else so I would bet that the same thing can be done with emails.

Despite the Security Notice we posted, despite posting it here. Your e-mail addresses are hidden from the outside world by default. But, many have added their email addresses again under "contact methods" or somewhere else in your public profile. If you have done that, scammers can reach out, pretending to be the seller and an unwary buyer sends the money to the scammer by mistake. Deal through PMs or directly via phone, unless you are very sure of the seller's email address. Never pay for guns via Paypal Friends & Family, or any other venue that does not support firearm transactions!! 2

Another thing that I saw on a random check was that some of them somehow sent a message to another member that everyone can read. I saw addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and other personal info also. It's how scammers get their foot in the door and they're good at what they do. There's a couple of layers of protection on this site that people ignore for some reason.... Use PM's, not public messages. Don't post any personal information (Email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers, etc) that can be viewed publicly anywhere on this site. Pretty damn simple, yet...

Dilli GaHoot Galoot
Quick tip, if you do get a call or message from someone do an online search for that ph#. Maybe not a totally foolproof way of screening folks, but it's a good first step. I've searched my name a couple different ways and the only way my email shows up that I can find, is on the TG Wire, from Rubys listing of all the TG's. Can non-TG's see that? I ask, because I posted an I'll take it on a listing and received the email below. BEFORE the PM I sent (with my email address) was opened. The grammar was flagging me, so I sat on replying and shortly after the real seller contacted me. This one baffles me a bit. I did a little search on you, got your real name, your home address, I think your wife's name, a couple corporations you have been associated with, and a couple possible phone numbers. But no email address. Which is a bit surprising, I usually can find more considering how many bread crumbs you have left behind. Almost everyone leaves breadcrumbs behind. Boonie Young
Howdy All, Just thought I'd throw this our there. I got several texts from 501-417-1627 claiming to be from a cowboy that I am wanting to buy from and wanting payment via PayPal. Not certain how he got my number, because I don't think its listed on my profile anywhere. The real cowboy and I are communicating via Wire PM. Eliphalet R. Moderator
A reminder, go back through your old posts, it's easier to find them using a Google search. I'm finding where folks put their names, addresses, and phone numbers in posts, years ago. You may not remember something from 6-8 years ago... But, the internet never forgets. John Kloehr
@Misty Moonshine I suggest SASS consider scrubbing phone numbers and other contact info of all officers, club leaders, and match directors from the SASS site (and wild bunch too). List only SASS alias for contact. I further suggest all clubs do the same. From there, members can use PMs to contact the various officers, who can then decide to share phone numbers or emails for further contact. What is very clear at this point is scammers are data mining this site and others. I have found contact information for several members recently. In every case, my search was prompted by reports of scammer contact. So far, I have not failed to find phone numbers, email addresses, real names, home addresses, relatives, and more. At this point, there is no value in hiding my knowledge, it is better everyone here knows what the scammers can find in less than a minute. We know they are already finding it, this post will not give them any new ideas. 2
Capt'n Rudy
Well, even as careful as I think I am, I got scammed last week, and even sent a $65 check in the mail. Here’s how it went down. I said “I’ll take it and sending a PM” for the RCBS Prep station for sale by Fireball. Sent a PM to Fireball with my cell number and asked where to send payment. Within an hour got a text from the scammer saying “ This is Fireball and what’s your shipping address cause the RCBS Prep station is all packaged up. “. The scammer then asked for payment via Zelle, which I didn’t do. I finally got his name and address to send the check, which I did the next morning. Then two days later the real Fireball texted me asking for payment. We talked by phone and I issued a stop payment with my bank (only good for six months). End of the story is I googled the address where I sent the check and it’s a halfway house in Grand Rapids. I called the organization and a Vice president had the mail room catch the check and send it back to me. And they are dealing with their resident on his scamming activity. Some Lessons learned, which I employed this week on another transaction. Rely on PM communications, not texts or emails. PM the seller and ask for his address, and also to text you a picture of his/her drivers license (since you can’t send photo in a PM), and compare info. Google the DL address Talk with the seller on the phone to gauge reality. Use info you gathered from the satellite images of the address. Contact the home club that’s listed on the seller’s SASS profile to make sure the cowboy/cowgirl seller still exists, (and is not in a memory-care facility, for example) If in doubt, don’t send money! And finally, asked the moderator to search and remove my cell number if used in the past, and we found one from 2019. the scammers are very resourceful and so we must be extra vigilant. Any others ideas to help us all stay safe? Regards, Capt’n Rudy

Eyesa Horg
At some point we're stuck with some exposure. Just look at the last few pages of a Chronicle! Alias's, names, phone numbers, emails, Web sites. We can't hide everywhere! Be as diligent as you can and hope for the best.
