If the police were to shoot a tear gas shell through the window of a 1500-sq-ft house, approximately how long would it take before people could go inside the house without wearing gas masks?

The gas will disperse pretty quick, BUT the clean up will be a total mess. Figure complete wash down of all walls, replacing carpets and any furniture and washing of anything contaminated.

Watching NCIS. they see somebody moving behind the glass so they yell for him to come out. He doesn't. They lob a tear gas shell through the window. Gas comes billowing out the broken glass. He starts shooting at them. They return fire. Firefight for about 2 minutes. Then they all stopped and everybody goes in to find the dead bad guy.

No masks. No protective gear of any sort. Just seem like that house would still be full of tear gas.

I know it's television. But when people are shooting at them they put on bulletproof vests. Why wouldn't they put on gas masks before going into a house full of gas? Even on television?

First of all tear gas is not a gas it’s a very fine powder about as fine as diamond dust so doesn’t dissipate like a gas it settles everywhere. Walking through it days later will just stir it up. This mostly applies to

CN and CS pepper spray in I believe an atomized liquid

The old tear gas loads used some sort of ignition when the hit inside. A lot of fires caused by the use of TG.

Yup, Waco/ Branch Davidian is a prime example.
