Captain Bill Burt 3,196
Probably the best song writing duo in history right there. The name of the album is very appropriate for this forum.

The original arrangement with Sky Dog’s slide guitar in the second half of the instrumental absolutely steals the show and with the absence of the last verse, (which is repeated) the whole premise of the song is lost! YMMV!

YMMV! You're not the first person I've heard say as much, and I respect the opinion. I always thought they just took it and did it differently. As a recording act (as opposed to an actual cover band or bar band, etc...), I wouldn't understand covering a song and plan on trying to do it note-for-note, phrase for phrase. A few covers come to mind, from The Power Station covering 'Bang a Gong,' to Dwight Yoakum covering 'Little Sister.' Do it, and make it yours. It probably helps that the Molly Hatchet version was the first I heard, and the only one I knew for many years, existing on vinyl in my collection and on cassette in my car. Besides, they had the coolest album covers.
Blackwater 53393 5,666
I’m a fan of Molly Hatchet! Whiskey Man and Flirtin’ With Disaster are two of my favorites!! Unlike you, I cut my teeth on the Brothers version, so I was disappointed when MH released their version. Yes, they “made it theirs” but in doing so, they killed the feel and message, for me. ”Pull myself together, Put on a new face. Climb down off the hilltop, baby, Get back in the race!!” I mean, that’s the message! There’s the hope! No matter how down you are, you can still take the world by the scruff of the neck and drag it around to your side of the fence!! And then there’s the orchestration and arrangement. No comparison there! My band covers it closely. The guys take pride in closely reproducing the arrangement and the instrumentals, but we STILL “make it ours”!!! I don't think there is a wrong answer, it is purely subjective. Since I was so familiar with the Molly Hatchet version, the first time I heard the Allman Brothers, there was a definite disconnect, that it was completely different. At first, I didn't care for it because of that, it definitely took getting used to. The lyrics you quote are in the Molly Hatchet version at the end, along with some additional lyrics. Interestingly, when I went to double check the lyrics, I checked several different lyric finders, and none of them could agree on what they are. To an extent, they're a partial turnaround (I think that would be the correct term, at any rate), but I have always still considered it a positive, that: "Cause I've got dreams I've got my dreams, To remember, Lord yeah..." I didn't mean to imply that a band couldn't play it close and "make it theirs," but when recording, most successful covers I think of take the song in a different direction. I can think of half a dozen such off the top of my head. Edited January 18 by DocWard
