Gun Value

Smoken D

Recommended Posts

Figure someone on here would know better than me. Last night a friend told me he had a rifle and was wanting me to look at it. He shot it a few years ago and was curious about the value. A local gun store told him they would give him $300 for it. Don't think so. Anyway it was dark out and will try and get a better look today. It is an original 1898 Marlin 44-40, 24" octagon barrel. The bluing is pretty well worn, other than that not bad looking. I'll also see about taking a photo. Don't know if he is interested in selling or not. Will find out.

Smoken, I'm assuming it's an 1894. Lots depends on condition but these go anywhere from $600 to a couple grand for one in pretty nice shape. With not much bluing but sound stock and action, a decent bore, probably $1000 or thereabouts. Condition is everything. cowrustler

Smoken D I would be interested in making him a very honest offer if I could get some details and pictures of it. message me if you think he would be interested.

Just found out it was his great-grandfathers and he is not interested in selling. By the serial number was made in 1893 and on the barrel could read manufactured Oct 12, 1887 - Apr 2, 1889. I figured and told him $700 - $1000 and insure it for the grand. Was a nice looking piece and sure would have been fun to shoot. Told him where he could get some ammo for it. Thanks cowrustler!

The rifle is a Marlin 1898 by serial number. Value is all related to condition. Your numbers are about right on 1000 for insurance.

I shoot my [rare]1888 in 38-40 with black powder loads, which are more accurate than I can shoot.

Nice rifle.

Also, I would never, never, never walk into that gunshop again. Sometimes the thieves are behind the counter!

The gunstore lowballed him but remember that the gunstore is in business to make money, not trade money. No one can both pay what it's worth and then sell what it's worth.....if it's the same amount.

Smoken, if it's side ejection, it's a Model 1889. If it's top eject, then it's a Model 1888 and worth a bit more, cowrustler

Side ejection, at first look in the dark I thought it was a 94, till I got a better look. Thanks

Smoken D. Your right on with your value and Insurance of thousand as far as the book value. I am a Appraiser have him check and see if his great grand farther had any provenance (special skills back in his life with the weapon that can raise the price also). If this can be documented this all helps in the history of the weapon. Were did he get it if known. Old guns like these have history that people do not look at when pricing when they know who own then back in the day. I just got through pricing a pistol that was found to belong to a Chief of Police back in 1932 during a bank robbery. You just never know.

Do you mean 1889? Did it look like this? This is an 1889 (manufactured in 1890) Has the funny little finger that hangs down near the trigger and the latch at the back of the lever.

I'll let him know, thanks.

Had to go up to first post and laugh at myself, one of those typo's we call it. Fingers did not go in the right place at the right time, it's a 1889 made in 1893, silly fingers  , the photo you have is it.

Howdy,

A Marlin 1898 is a shotgun according to

Blue Book, worth about 200.

Best

See above

Haha..I kind of thought it was a typo. I just got my 1889 as a gift from my dad. I posted about it in the Wire. Someone before he got it refurbished the finish so it looks brand new, kinda ruined the collector value but still cool to me. I'm a collector that collects things I like not because they are valuable. :) Sounds like your friend has a nice rifle too
