Calamity Kris
I'm looking for a house to rent for our first year in St Louis until we can find an area we want to call home. I've see lots of them on the web but the guy who answered the phone wouldn't talk with me about them until I gave him my credit card for a $90.00 "membership" fee to "broker" the rentals for me. Sounded fishy to me so I didn't do it. How does one find out about houses to rent? Are there realtors who deal in rentals? I'd really appreciate some guidance with this. Thanks kindly. St. Louis Suomi SASS #31905
Howdy: I like in a suburb of St Louis - about 40 miles or so west on HWY 70. Right now it is pouring rain so I can't go out and get the name of a couple of real estate agents that live in my immediate neighbor hood. When the rain stops I will get thier names - phones number and possibly they can help you. My immediate neighborhood is clustered around a golf course (I don't play golf), and excitement in this neighborhood is watching grass grow (Many retired folks). Homes are in the range of $250-$400K - no noise, no wild parties, just the sound of lawn mowers and the race of cars to go to work in St Louis (530-600 AM) weekdays. :-) My county is St Charles (very conservative socially, religiously and politically (with a few renegades here and there). Horsey folks live about 10 fifteen miles further west if that is your gig. STL Suomi
BLACKFOOT SASS #11947
Many real estate brokers have properties under management for clients. Check with any real estate office to find out if they have rentals available. Lafitte
Krazy Kajun
+1 on contacting real estate agencies directly. When we moved from Texas to Georgia we did the same....rented a house for a year until we found an area we liked and built a house. The real estate agent faxed (this was 1992 before emails with attachments) us information on several homes and we selected a few to look at when I flew back to GA for a second interview and found a nice house in a good neighborhood for a reasonable monthly rental. This particular real estate agency had a good number of rental houses that they managed for some local owners and were a good source of information. Badlands Bob #61228
A lot of your better (cleaner) rentals are not advertised. A local real estate agent should be able to steer you in the right direction.

St. Louis Suomi SASS #31905
Howdy Again: This is one of the best Realtors in my subdivision (we have at least three or four). Karen ClarkAgentMember of the National Association of REALTORS® 3792 Monticello PlzSaint Charles, MO 63304 (636) 373-4776 Mobile Give her a call and she can help you find property in St Charles. St Louis is quite a bit like Chicago, very rough except in certain isolated enclaves (read $1 Million) homes. STL Suomi

Calamity Kris
Thanks so much for the great info and the contact, STL. I'll call them in the morning. I'll have to work on setting up a dinner to meet some of you wonderful folks while I'm out there in a couple of weeks. TT, I would check the St. Louis paper but they don't deliver to Los Angeles. Cat Brules
You want to find a property management company. Owners contract with them to find reputable tenants (those who pass a background check and can show that they have a regular income and can put up a security deposit and can reliably pay rent). Look in the yellow pages or google them for the area you want to live in. Or you can contact a good local real estate brokerage and ask them who the best property management companies are in the area. A legitimate property management company will show you suitable rentals and will not charge you a fee for finding you a rental. They make their money from the property owner with a percentage fee from the rent. You pay the rent to the management company, they take their cut and send the owner the balance. The outfit you contacted simply collects information from local sources, updates it once a week and sells that to you. It's up to you to drive around and find the owner to show you the place. It's a scam.
