Bugsbunnyshooter Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I was cleaning my new Uberti and after I put the base pin back and and tried to remove it I noticed its stuck. The cylinder revolves great and the hammer drops great I just can get the base pin out. Have any of you had a stuck base pin. How did you fix yours? Also do you keep extra parts on hand to fix anything that breaks. I ask beacuse I am about to see about getting some extra springs and such and a new base pin. Have you found a source for Uberti parts the base pins seem to be on back order most places.
Pit Bull Tex Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 VTI for base pins and screws and all.For springs I have evil roy.
Matthew Duncan Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I removed the hammer and drove the pin out from the hammer side Found a burr on the pin
Lone Dog, SASS #20401 Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 If you bend your rod a little you can drive the base pin out without removing the hammer. Found a burr on mine causing it to have to be driven out with a bent rod and brass hammer. Two seconds with a file and all is good again.
Bugsbunnyshooter Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 It was really stuck. Steve Young had to remove the hammer and drive the pin out with a punch. It was really stuck
Roger Rapid Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Check that the shoulder of the spring latch fully clears the bore of the pin when it is depressed (but, of course, you need the pin out to do this). If not, it will prevent the pin from coming out easily. You can rework the shape of the shoulder of the spring latch so that when it is depressed, the shoulder is not visible in the bore. This condition also presents itself when the two halves of the spring latch are tightly screwed together, and the spring is fully compressed (i.e., the spring latch is pushed in all the way) that the shoulder doesn't fully clear the pin's bore. You'll need a good light to see this well. Be careful when you use a file to remove a burr that you remove the burr only and not put a flat in the pin. If the pin is really tight, and the spring latch gets fully out of the way, you can try polish the pin on a buffing wheel to lightly remove any surface residue and generally clean up the surface. Sometimes a small burr at the edges of the pin's bore - either on the front or on the rear portion of the frame - can cause the pin to be too snug, but it typically won't cause it to get stuck. While the hammer spring and trigger/bolt springs will last a good long time, I think it's a good idea to carry spare springs - they're not expensive and field installation of these springs is quick and easy. VTI is a good source and most dealers can get the Uberti spring kits. ..R
Chili Ron Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Howdy, The only single action parts that I have ever lost in the field are the screw and spring on the ejector rod. Its not a big deal but spares would be cheap and easy to take along. My solution is always carry a spare. I watched the Lone Ranger a lot as a child. He always carried two guns. And I always backed up data...ya know I never thought about that. Best CR
Snakebite Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Put the barrel in a large vise and clamp it down... don't use any padding, let the teeth grip into the barrel for a good hold... then use a pair of Vise Grips to clamp down hard on the base pin and use a big hammer to drive it out. That ought to do it! sb

Colorado Coffinmaker Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Hey Buggs, Just had a thought. Did you have Steve shorten the base pin while he had it out??? I would expect Steve would shorten it and polish it up as part of his routine, but just thought I'd suggest. Coffinmaker
Bugsbunnyshooter Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 Yes he fixed it up and also while he had the Uberti apart showed me a few things about how it works and smoothed a few things he noticed.
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 KOOL. I've known Steve a long time and he is a super person to do business with. Coffinmaker
Bugsbunnyshooter Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 He has really helped me get into CAS. Lol and he is fun to talk to. I purchased one of his old Rossi 92's that he used and a SXS that he used also. The best part has been him taking the time to show me how and why stuff works.

I got lazy about tightening screws, and it cost me.
Lone Dog, SASS #20401 Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Oh I forgot to mention that unless you have three hands, you will need an assistant to press in on the latch while you whack out the base pin with the bent rod and brass hammer.
